Lindenwood dominates Omaha in lopsided women’s basketball victory

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Lindenwood Lions delivered a commanding performance from the opening tip, cruising to a decisive 85-41 victory over the Omaha Mavericks in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Baxter Arena.

Lindenwood’s dominance was established immediately, opening the game on a 14-0 run and outscoring Omaha 27-8 in the first quarter. The Lions never relented, building a 50-22 lead by halftime and maintaining a comfortable margin throughout the second half before an announced crowd of 695.

Brooke Coffey led a balanced and efficient Lions attack, posting a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play. The 6-foot-1 forward from St. Charles, Missouri, was a force on both ends, adding two assists and two steals.

Ellie Brueggemann orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out seven assists to go with her 14 points. Aleshia Jones also reached double figures, scoring 10 points and contributing four assists and three steals. The Lions’ interior presence was bolstered by Gracie Kelsey, who added 13 points and four rebounds, and Gracy Wernli, who chipped in 11 points.

For Omaha, which struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm, Lillian Merow of Port Washington, Wisconsin, provided a bright spot with a game-high 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Avril Smith, a hometown player from Omaha, battled inside for nine rebounds. Sarai Estupiñan led the Mavericks’ scorers with eight points and four assists.

The game’s outcome was never in doubt after the initial surge. Lindenwood’s pressure defense forced numerous early turnovers, which were quickly converted into easy baskets. The Lions’ offensive execution was sharp, with the team consistently finding open shooters and cutters.

The victory improves Lindenwood’s season record to 4-1, continuing a strong start that includes wins over Missouri-Kansas City and Oral Roberts, with the lone loss coming on the road against Baylor. The loss drops Omaha to 1-6 on the season, extending a difficult stretch that has seen the Mavericks lose five straight games since a season-opening victory over St. Mary.

Lindenwood will look to continue its winning ways as it travels to Honolulu for a game against Santa Clara next Friday. Omaha, seeking to halt its skid, will hit the road to face Idaho State on Dec. 3.
