LSU Routs Alcorn State to Remain Undefeated
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming force, the LSU women’s basketball team delivered a commanding 112-49 victory over the visiting Alcorn State Lady Braves on Thursday night at a raucous Maravich Assembly Center.
The game was effectively decided in the opening minutes, as the Tigers unleashed a blistering first-quarter performance, outscoring the Lady Braves 31-11. LSU’s suffocating defense and relentless transition offense set the tone, creating a deficit from which Alcorn State could never recover. The Tigers continued their dominance in the second quarter, adding 26 points to their total while holding the Lady Braves to just 10, entering halftime with a 57-21 lead.
The second half offered no respite for the visitors. LSU maintained its intensity, scoring 29 points in the third quarter and another 26 in the fourth. Alcorn State found slightly more offensive rhythm after the break, scoring 14 points in each of the final two periods, but it was nowhere near enough to challenge the Tigers’ control of the game.
The statistical sheet painted a clear picture of the lopsided contest. LSU’s offensive efficiency was staggering, scoring 112 points on 79 possessions for an offensive rating of 141.3. The Tigers shot a remarkable 57.7 percent from the floor, connecting on 41 of 71 attempts. They also capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 24 of 30 attempts.
Alcorn State, by contrast, struggled mightily with LSU’s defensive pressure. The Lady Braves scored 49 points on 80 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 61.5. They shot 37.5 percent from the field and committed 29 turnovers, which LSU converted into 49 points. A glaring disparity on the glass saw the Tigers haul in 23 offensive rebounds compared to just three for the Lady Braves, leading to a 58-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The Tigers’ victory was a balanced effort, with six players scoring in double figures. MiLaysia Fulwiley, a 5-foot-10 guard from Columbia, South Carolina, came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points in just 20 minutes of action. Flau’Jae Johnson, a 5-10 guard from Savannah, Georgia, also tallied 18 points to go with three assists.
Mikaylah Williams, a 6-foot guard from Bossier City, Louisiana, contributed 15 points, while the Tigers’ interior presence was felt strongly through Kate Koval, a 6-5 center from Kyiv, Ukraine, who scored 15 points, and Grace Knox, a 6-2 forward from Las Vegas, Nevada, who added 12 points and a block.
For Alcorn State, Nakia Cheathman, a 6-foot forward from Clarksdale, Mississippi, was a bright spot, finishing with a team-high 16 points. Maya Claytor, a 5-6 guard from Wahiawa, Hawaii, added 11 points in the losing effort.
With the win, LSU remains undefeated, improving its record to 6-0. The loss drops Alcorn State to 1-3 on the season. The announced attendance for the game was 9,575.
The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways on the road against Duke on Dec. 4. Alcorn State’s next contest is a neutral-site game against Mississippi State on Nov. 24 in Niceville, Florida.
