Fordham at Seton Hall
NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — In a marathon contest that required two overtimes to decide a winner, the Seton Hall Pirates remained undefeated, outlasting the Fordham Rams 90-83 in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Thursday night at Prudential Center.
The game was a tale of contrasting strengths, with Seton Hall’s defense and efficiency at the free-throw line ultimately overcoming a monumental individual scoring performance from Fordham’s Alexis Black.
Black, a guard from Washington, D.C., was spectacular in defeat, pouring in a game-high 42 points while playing 47 minutes. She was the engine of the Fordham offense, carrying the scoring load as the Rams battled back from a first-quarter deficit to force the extra periods. Ugne Sirtautaite of Kaunas, Lithuania, provided support for the Rams with 15 points.
Seton Hall’s victory was a collective effort, led by Mariana Valenzuela from Mazatlan, Mexico, who scored 21 points, and Savannah Catalon of Mansfield, Texas, who added 20. The Pirates also received a significant contribution from Jada Eads of Orlando, Florida, who chipped in 16 points.
The game was ultimately decided at the free-throw line and by ball security. Seton Hall attempted more than twice as many free throws as Fordham, making 32 of 45 attempts. Fordham, by contrast, connected on just 13 of its 20 chances from the line. The Rams were also plagued by turnovers, committing 23 giveaways that led to 28 points for the Pirates. Seton Hall committed only 13 turnovers.
Despite being outshot from the field — Seton Hall made 24 of 74 field goals (32.4%) while Fordham made 31 of 72 (43.1%) — the Pirates dominated the glass with 20 offensive rebounds, creating numerous second-chance opportunities. Seton Hall also dished out 14 assists and recorded 14 steals, showcasing a disruptive defensive presence.
Fordham started slowly, trailing 21-16 after the first quarter, but steadily chipped away at the lead. The game was tightly contested through the second half, with both teams scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter to end regulation tied. The first overtime was a low-scoring affair, with each team managing only five points, setting the stage for the decisive second overtime.
In the final period, Seton Hall’s depth and composure shone through. The Pirates exploded for 13 points, finally creating separation from a resilient Fordham squad that was led by Black’s heroic efforts but ultimately could not overcome its mistakes and Seton Hall’s relentless pressure.
With the win, Seton Hall improves to 4-0 on the young season. Fordham’s record evens at 3-3. The Pirates next travel to face Princeton on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Fordham returns home to host Manhattan on Sunday, Nov. 23.
