Ohio at Xavier

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a commanding display of efficiency and defense, the Xavier women’s basketball team secured a decisive 74-53 victory over the visiting Ohio Bobcats on Thursday night at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers improved their season record to 3-2, while the Bobcats fell to an even 2-2.

Xavier established control early, outscoring Ohio 17-14 in the first quarter and extending the lead to 35-23 by halftime. The Musketeers’ offensive execution proved superior throughout the contest, as they scored their 74 points on just 68 possessions, translating to an impressive offensive rating of 109.3. Ohio, by contrast, managed only 53 points from 71 possessions for an offensive rating of 74.5.

The Bobcats struggled mightily with their shooting touch. They finished the game 19 of 59 from the floor, a 32.2 percent clip, and were particularly cold from beyond the arc, hitting just 8 of 37 three-point attempts. Free throws were also an issue, as Ohio converted only 7 of 15 from the line.

Xavier shot a efficient 45.8 percent from the field, making 27 of 59 attempts, and connected on 10 of 31 three-pointers. The Musketeers were also more reliable at the free-throw line, making 10 of 12.

The game featured a standout performance from Xavier’s MacKenzie Givens. The Cincinnati native scored a game-high 20 points in just 32 minutes of action. She was complemented by Mariyah Noel, who added 19 points and dished out a team-high five assists.

For Ohio, Aliah McWhorter, also hailing from Cincinnati, led the way with 15 points, three assists and a block. The Bobcats did win the turnover battle, forcing 16 Xavier miscues while committing 13 of their own, and also tallied 10 steals compared to Xavier’s four. However, their offensive struggles were too significant to overcome.

Xavier’s interior defense was a key factor, recording seven blocks led by Savannah White’s three. White also contributed seven points and five assists. Meri Kanerva of Xavier filled the stat sheet with 11 points, five assists and two blocks.

The announced attendance for the non-conference matchup was 964.

Xavier’s next contest is on the road Monday at Akron. Ohio returns to action Monday at home against Wright State.
