Xavier Routs Ohio in Women’s Basketball Behind Givens’ 20 Points

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a commanding display of efficiency and defensive prowess, the Xavier Musketeers defeated the Ohio Bobcats 74-53 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Cintas Center.

The Musketeers improved their season record to 3-2, while the Bobcats fell to an even 2-2.

Xavier seized control of the contest early and never relented, methodically building their lead each quarter. After taking a 35-23 advantage into halftime, the Musketeers outscored the Bobcats 21-18 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the fourth to secure the 21-point victory.

The story of the game was told in the shooting percentages and overall offensive execution. Xavier was markedly more efficient, converting their possessions into points at a far higher rate. The Musketeers shot 46 percent from the field, compared to a frigid 32 percent for Ohio. The three-point line was particularly unkind to the Bobcats, who made just 8 of 37 attempts from beyond the arc. Xavier, meanwhile, connected on 10 of 31 three-point tries.

From the free-throw line, the Musketeers were also superior, making 10 of 12 attempts. Ohio struggled there as well, hitting only 7 of 15.

Defensively, Xavier’s length and positioning caused problems all night, amassing seven blocked shots and limiting Ohio’s offensive flow. The Bobcats did show tenacity on the defensive end, recording 10 steals and forcing 13 Xavier turnovers, but their own 16 turnovers and poor shooting negated those efforts.

The individual standout for Xavier was sophomore guard MacKenzie Givens. The Cincinnati native poured in a game-high 20 points, consistently finding seams in the Ohio defense for driving layups and efficient finishes inside. She was a central figure in the Musketeers’ offensive sets and provided a reliable scoring option throughout the contest.

She was ably supported by junior guard Mariyah Noel, who turned in a stellar all-around performance with 19 points and a game-high five assists. Noel’s ability to both score and facilitate was instrumental in Xavier’s offensive consistency.

The Musketeers also received significant contributions from senior forward Savannah White, who anchored the defense with three blocks and seven points, and senior guard Meri Kanerva of Espoo, Finland, who filled the stat sheet with 11 points and five assists.

For Ohio, the bright spot was the play of junior forward Aliah McWhorter. The Cincinnati native led the Bobcats with 15 points and added three assists and a block in her return to her hometown. Her aggressive drives to the basket provided some of Ohio’s few consistent offensive moments.

Other contributors for the Bobcats included guards Bailey Tabeling with nine points and four assists, and Gigi Bower with eight points. Forward Asiah Baxter also added eight points.

The game began with Xavier establishing an early lead and maintaining it through the first quarter, ending the period up 17-14. The Musketeers then began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 18-9 to take a commanding 12-point lead into the break. Ohio could not mount a significant challenge in the second half, as Xavier’s lead never dipped below double digits.

The Bobcats will look to rebound when they return home to face Wright State on Monday. Xavier, meanwhile, hits the road for their next contest, a Monday matchup against Akron.
