Oregon Women Roll Past Army, Remain Undefeated
EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The Oregon Ducks used a dominant fourth-quarter surge to pull away from the Army Black Knights, securing an 80-55 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at a boisterous Matthew Knight Arena.
In a contest defined by defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Ducks remained undefeated on the young season, improving to 4-0, while the Black Knights fell to 3-1.
Oregon’s depth and relentless defensive effort proved to be the difference. The Ducks forced 22 Army turnovers, converting them into numerous transition opportunities, while committing only 15 of their own. Oregon also recorded 12 steals, led by a swarming team defense that disrupted Army’s offensive flow for long stretches.
The game was competitive through the first three quarters. After a slow start from both teams, Oregon held a 14-6 lead after the first period. Army responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Ducks 19-21 to narrow the gap to 35-40 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Black Knights continue to hang around, trailing by just 11 points heading into the final frame. However, the Ducks exploded in the fourth quarter, outscoring Army 26-13 to turn a manageable lead into a decisive rout. Oregon’s offensive execution was nearly flawless in the final period, as they shot efficiently from the field and capitalized on their chances at the free-throw line.
Oregon’s offensive attack was both balanced and potent. Five Ducks scored in double figures, showcasing the team’s multifaceted scoring threats. Mia Jacobs, a sophomore from Perth, Australia, led the way with 17 points and five rebounds. Amina Muhammad, coming off the bench, provided a massive spark with 14 points, four rebounds and a block in just 17 minutes of action.
The backcourt duo of Sofia Bell and Katie Fiso orchestrated the offense effectively. Bell, a hometown product from Portland, chipped in 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Fiso, from Seattle, was the engine of the team, dishing out 10 assists to go along with 12 points, narrowly missing a double-double. Sarah Rambus also added 12 points for the Ducks.
A key statistic in the game was free-throw shooting. Oregon was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe, a display of clutch shooting that extinguished any hope of an Army comeback. In stark contrast, Army managed only 2-of-5 from the line.
Army was led by a stellar performance from Kya Smith. The 6-foot-1 forward from Lubbock, Texas, was a force inside, scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds in 37 minutes. Despite her individual efforts, the Black Knights struggled with Oregon’s defensive schemes and could not find consistent secondary scoring.
Camryn Tade added eight points and four rebounds for Army, while point guard Reese Ericson, playing in her home state, distributed eight assists but was held to six points on inefficient shooting.
From the field, Oregon shot 56 percent, connecting on 32 of 57 attempts. Army finished at 44 percent, making 23 of 52 shots, but their 22 turnovers and poor free-throw shooting ultimately sealed their fate. The Ducks also held a slight edge in assists, 12 to 7, reflecting their more fluid ball movement.
The announced attendance of 4,646 at Matthew Knight Arena watched as the Ducks methodically dismantled a previously unbeaten Army squad, using a complete team effort to cement their fourth consecutive victory to open the season. Oregon now looks ahead to a road test against Washington State, while Army returns home to face New Hampshire.
