Cornell at Canisius
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Cornell women’s basketball team used a stifling defensive effort to secure a 62-50 victory over Canisius on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center, improving to .500 on the young season.
In a game defined by ball pressure and forced mistakes, the Big Red capitalized on 22 Golden Griffins turnovers, converting them into 24 points. The victory moved Cornell to 2-2 overall, while Canisius remained winless, dropping to 0-5.
Cornell established control early, holding the Golden Griffins to just 10 points in the first quarter and 9 in the second to take a 29-19 lead into halftime. The Big Red’s defense was relentless, amassing 11 steals in the contest.
Canisius mounted its most significant challenge in the third quarter, outscoring Cornell 18-13 behind a surge from Franka Wittenberg. The Golden Griffins cut the deficit to as little as five points, but could never draw even. Cornell responded emphatically in the final period, erupting for 20 points to pull away and seal the win.
The Big Red’s offense was efficient, shooting 52.4 percent from the floor, compared to 47.5 percent for Canisius. While both teams struggled from beyond the arc, Cornell found consistent success inside, scoring 34 points in the paint. A significant advantage came at the free-throw line, where the Big Red connected on 15 of 17 attempts, while Canisius was a perfect but less frequent 7 for 7.
Rachel Kaus led all scorers for Cornell with 18 points, while Paige Engels added 15 and Clarke Jackson contributed 12. Emily Pape was a force on both ends, narrowly missing a double-double with 9 points and 8 rebounds, while also anchoring the team’s defensive efforts.
Canisius was led by Franka Wittenberg, who scored 17 points. Shariah Gailes and Irene Rey Pineda each added 7 points for the Golden Griffins, with Pineda dishing out a team-high 4 assists.
The game was a departure from the preseason statistical projections, which had favored the home team. Interstat’s ELO system had given Canisius a 51.70 percent probability to win, a forecast overturned by Cornell’s disruptive defense and efficient scoring.
The announced attendance was 107.
Cornell looks to build on the win when it returns home to face Colgate on Tuesday. Canisius will continue its search for its first victory on the road at Dayton next Friday.
