Cornell women pull away from Canisius for road victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Cornell women’s basketball team used a stifling defensive effort to secure a 62-50 victory over Canisius on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center, pulling its season record back to the .500 mark.

In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic scoring, the Big Red built a commanding early lead and weathered a third-quarter surge from the Golden Griffins to earn the road win. The victory improved Cornell’s record to 2-2, while Canisius remained winless, dropping to 0-5.

Cornell established control from the opening tip, jumping out to a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. The Big Red’s defense then clamped down in the second period, holding the Golden Griffins to just nine points. A balanced offensive attack saw Cornell extend its advantage to 29-19 by halftime.

The third quarter provided the game’s pivotal swing. Canisius, led by a determined effort from Franka Wittenberg, mounted a significant comeback. The Golden Griffins exploded for 18 points in the period, outscoring Cornell by five to cut the deficit to 42-37 heading into the final frame. The Big Red’s once-comfortable lead was suddenly in jeopardy.

However, Cornell responded with its best offensive quarter of the game, pouring in 20 points in the fourth to quell the Canisius rally and pull away for the 12-point victory. The Big Red’s ability to score consistently inside was a key factor, as they outscored Canisius 34-28 in the paint. Cornell also capitalized on mistakes, scoring 24 points off turnovers compared to 16 for the Golden Griffins.

Rachel Kaus led all scorers for Cornell, finishing with a game-high 18 points to go along with two rebounds. Paige Engels provided a steadying presence, contributing 15 points, three assists and a game-high 36 minutes of action. Clarke Jackson also finished in double figures with 12 points, while Emily Pape anchored the interior with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Canisius was led by Franka Wittenberg, who scored 17 points and added three rebounds. Irene Rey Pineda facilitated the offense with four assists, and Shariah Gailes chipped in seven points and four rebounds.

The game was a tale of two halves for the Golden Griffins, who showed renewed fight after the break but could not overcome their cold start and the Big Red’s persistent defensive pressure.

The contest was part of a challenging early-season stretch for both teams. Cornell entered the game having split its previous two outings, including a narrow 53-49 win at Mercyhurst just two days prior. Canisius, meanwhile, was seeking its first win after opening the season with four consecutive losses, including a defeat to Saint Bonaventure on Friday.

Looking ahead, Cornell returns home to face Colgate on Tuesday, aiming to build a winning streak. Canisius continues its search for that elusive first victory when it travels to face Dayton on Friday.
