Davidson at Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Davidson Wildcats used a dominant first half and a balanced scoring attack to secure a 74-55 victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Holmes Center.
Davidson never trailed, establishing control early with a 19-point first quarter and maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the contest. The Wildcats improved to 3-1 on the young season, while the Mountaineers suffered their first loss, falling to 2-1.
The Wildcats’ offense operated with precision, shooting 56 percent from the floor and a blistering 47 percent from three-point range. Their efficiency was highlighted by an offensive rating of 107.8 points per 100 possessions, significantly outpacing Appalachian State’s mark of 83.9.
Emilie Bessell, a guard from Sydney, Australia, led all scorers with 19 points for Davidson. She was complemented by a strong performance from Charlise Dunn of Victoria Point, Australia, who recorded a near double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds in just 29 minutes of play. The Wildcats’ international influence continued with contributions from Hungary’s Edina Strausz, who added 12 points, and Spain’s Ines Garcia Monje, who chipped in six points, five rebounds and three assists.
Davidson’s interior presence was a key factor, as they outscored Appalachian State 38-30 in the paint and blocked four shots.
Appalachian State struggled to find its shooting touch, particularly from beyond the arc where they managed just one made three-pointer on 11 attempts. Emma Smith of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, led the Mountaineers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Elena Pericic from Rijeka, Croatia, provided 13 points, and Daisia Mitchell of Riverside, California, scored 10.
Despite committing six fewer turnovers than Davidson, the Mountaineers could not overcome their shooting woes or contain the Wildcats’ efficient offense. Appalachian State did hold a 10-4 advantage in offensive rebounds, but converted that into only a slight 14-12 edge in second-chance points.
Davidson built a 35-28 lead by halftime and extended its advantage after the break, outscoring Appalachian State 19-16 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Wildcats closed the game strongly with a 20-point fourth quarter.
An announced crowd of 489 was on hand at the Holmes Center to witness the matchup.
Davidson’s next game is at home against Iona on Sunday. Appalachian State will look to rebound when it hosts Wofford, also on Sunday.
