Davidson Routs Appalachian State in Women’s Basketball Showdown

BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Davidson Wildcats used a dominant first quarter and an efficient offensive performance to secure a convincing 74-55 victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Holmes Center.

Davidson established control early, opening the game on a 12-2 run and never looking back. The Wildcats led 19-14 after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 35-28 by halftime. Appalachian State could not mount a significant challenge in the second half, as Davidson maintained a steady lead, outscoring the Mountaineers 39-27 over the final two quarters.

The Wildcats’ offensive execution was the story of the game. They shot a blistering 56 percent from the floor, connecting on 28 of 50 field goal attempts. Their success from beyond the arc was particularly devastating, as they made 9 of 19 three-pointers. Defensively, Davidson limited Appalachian State to 35 percent shooting, and the Mountaineers managed to make just one three-pointer on 11 attempts.

Davidson’s offensive rating of 107.8 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Appalachian State’s mark of 83.9, underscoring the Wildcats’ superior efficiency. Davidson also dominated scoring in the paint, holding a 38-30 edge.

Emilie Bessell, a guard from Sydney, Australia, led all scorers with 19 points for Davidson. She was complemented by a strong all-around performance from forward Charlise Dunn of Victoria Point, Australia, who tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double. Dunn also contributed two assists and two blocks. Forward Edina Strausz from Budapest, Hungary, added 12 points and four rebounds.

Appalachian State was led by guard Emma Smith of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, who scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Forward Elena Pericic from Rijeka, Croatia, provided 13 points for the Mountaineers. Despite committing fewer turnovers, 10 to Davidson’s 16, and securing 10 offensive rebounds, Appalachian State could not overcome its poor shooting night.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 489. With the win, Davidson improved its season record to 3-1, while Appalachian State fell to 2-1. The Wildcats will next host Iona on Sunday. The Mountaineers are scheduled to play Wofford at home, also on Sunday.
