Furman at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium, overwhelming the visiting Furman Paladins in a 96-48 non-conference victory.
From the opening tip, the Commodores established a dominant presence, particularly on the defensive end, which fueled their transition offense and never allowed the Paladins to find an offensive rhythm. Vanderbilt improved its record to 2-0 with the win, while Furman fell to 1-2.
The Commodores set the tone early, closing the first quarter on a 19-3 run to lead 21-13. The defensive pressure only intensified in the second period, as Vanderbilt outscored Furman 22-9 to take a commanding 43-22 lead into halftime. The Paladins struggled immensely with ball security, committing 23 turnovers in the game, which the Commodores converted into 41 points.
Vanderbilt’s offense was a model of efficiency, shooting 56 percent from the floor on 37-of-66 shooting. They also connected on 10 three-pointers and shared the ball effectively, tallying 14 assists. Defensively, they matched Furman’s total of 14 steals.
The Commodores’ attack was balanced and potent, with four players scoring in double figures. Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda led the way with 16 points, while Mikayla Blakes added 15. Justine Pissott contributed 13 points, and Aiyana Mitchell recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Facilitator Aubrey Galvan directed the offense with a game-high eight assists.
Furman was led by Alyssa Ervin, who scored 16 points. Raina McGowens added 10 points for the Paladins, but the team shot just 33 percent from the field and was hampered by its turnover issues throughout the contest.
Vanderbilt continued to extend its lead after halftime, outscoring Furman 28-10 in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach before closing out the victory in the fourth.
The announced attendance at Memorial Gymnasium was 2,352.
Vanderbilt will look to continue its early-season success on the road against Austin Peay on Wednesday. Furman returns home to face Georgia State on Thursday.
