Vanderbilt women roll past Furman in dominant home victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team delivered a resounding 96-48 victory over the visiting Furman Paladins on Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Commodores improved their early-season record to 2-0, while the loss dropped Furman to 1-2.

Vanderbilt’s dominance was evident from the opening tip, as they methodically built a double-digit lead and never relented. The Commodores closed the first quarter leading 21-13 and extended their advantage to 43-22 by halftime. The onslaught continued after the break, with Vanderbilt outscoring Furman 28-10 in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach.

The statistical sheet painted a clear picture of the lopsided affair. Vanderbilt’s offense operated with remarkable efficiency, shooting 56 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range. Defensively, they were a nightmare for the Paladins, forcing 23 turnovers and converting them into numerous transition opportunities. The Commodores also tallied 14 steals and dished out 14 assists, showcasing a well-rounded and unselfish performance.

Conversely, Furman struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm. The Paladins shot just 33 percent from the field and were hampered by the relentless Vanderbilt defense. They managed only five assists against their 23 turnovers, highlighting the difficulty they faced in running their offensive sets.

Vanderbilt’s victory was a collective effort, with several players turning in standout performances. Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda led all scorers with 16 points, while Mikayla Blakes filled the stat sheet with 15 points, four assists and four steals. Justine Pissott contributed 13 points and six assists, and Aubrey Galvan orchestrated the offense masterfully, distributing a game-high eight assists to go with her 11 points. Aiyana Mitchell provided a strong presence off the bench, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

For Furman, Alyssa Ervin was a bright spot, leading the Paladins with 16 points. Raina McGowens added 10 points and four assists in the losing effort.

The game was part of a challenging early-season stretch for Furman, which was coming off a 91-45 loss to Georgia. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, continued its strong start after a season-opening win over California.

An announced crowd of 2,352 at Memorial Gymnasium witnessed the Commodores’ comprehensive victory, which was heavily favored by statistical projections.

Vanderbilt looks to continue its winning ways on the road against Austin Peay on Wednesday. Furman returns home to face Georgia State on Thursday, seeking to rebound and get back to a .500 record.
