Florida Routs Jacksonville in Women’s Basketball Showdown

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Gators women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Monday night, overwhelming the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins 100-55 in a non-conference matchup at the O’Connell Center.

From the opening tip, the Gators established a dominant tone, racing out to a 28-6 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The victory improved Florida’s record to a perfect 3-0 to start the season, while Jacksonville evened its record at 1-1.

Florida’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 100 points on 85 possessions for an offensive rating of 118.2. The Gators shot 51.5 percent from the field, connecting on 35 of 68 attempts. While their three-point shooting was modest at 4 for 19, they relentlessly attacked the basket, amassing 60 points in the paint and capitalizing on 26 of 35 trips to the free-throw line.

Defensively, Florida was equally imposing. The Gators forced Jacksonville into 25 turnovers, converting those miscues into 32 points. Florida also tallied 14 steals and controlled the glass with 12 offensive rebounds.

Jacksonville struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the relentless Florida pressure. The Dolphins finished with an offensive rating of just 66.2, shooting 21 for 59 from the floor for a 35.6 percent clip. They were hampered by their 25 turnovers and managed only 11 points off of Florida’s 12 giveaways.

The Gators’ attack was balanced and potent, led by a standout performance from Me’Arah O’Neal. The 6-foot-4 sophomore from Houston, Texas, scored a game-high 20 points in just 19 minutes of action, showcasing her efficiency inside.

She was complemented by a strong backcourt showing from Liv McGill. The sophomore guard from Minneapolis, Minnesota, poured in 19 points and dished out three assists, consistently breaking down the Jacksonville defense. Laila Reynolds, a 6-foot-1 guard from PG County, Maryland, provided a third major scoring threat, adding 17 points and three assists in 31 minutes.

Further depth was on display as KN’isha Godfrey contributed 10 points off the bench, and Gift Ezekial nearly reached double figures with nine points in just nine minutes. Caterina Piatti of Reggio Emilia, Italy, also chipped in nine points.

For Jacksonville, Bailey Burns from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, led the team with 10 points. Carmaya Bowman added eight points, while Tatum Brown, who tallied six points, facilitated the offense with a team-high five assists in the losing effort.

The game was effectively decided in the first half. After O’Neal won the opening jump ball, she immediately sank a three-pointer to start the scoring. Florida’s defensive pressure forced a series of early Jacksonville turnovers, fueling a 17-2 run that put the Gators firmly in control. By the end of the first quarter, the lead had ballooned to 22 points.

The Gators continued to extend their advantage in the second quarter, outscoring the Dolphins 27-14 to take a 55-20 lead into halftime. The second half offered more of the same, with Florida maintaining its intensity and offensive output to cruise to the 45-point victory.

The announced attendance at the O’Connell Center was 1,224.

Looking ahead, Florida will aim to continue its winning streak when it hosts Samford on Thursday. Jacksonville will hit the road for its next contest, facing Georgia Tech on Sunday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Florida entered the game with a 98.10 percent probability to win, a forecast the Gators fulfilled with a comprehensive and overpowering display on their home court.
