Cornell at Bryant
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Interstat) — The Bryant Bulldogs used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to overpower the Cornell Big Red 64-38 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Chace Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Big Red opened their campaign with a loss.
Bryant seized control from the opening tip, holding Cornell to just five points in the first quarter and building a 17-5 lead. The Bulldogs never relented, extending their advantage with a 21-point third quarter that put the game out of reach.
Nia Scott led the way for Bryant with a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocks. Mia Mancini was the game’s high scorer, contributing 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Bulldogs’ defense was anchored by Rose Nelson, who blocked three shots and altered numerous others.
Cornell struggled offensively throughout the contest. The Big Red shot just 26 percent from the floor and committed 15 turnovers, which Bryant converted into easy scoring opportunities. Emily Pape led Cornell with nine points and seven rebounds. Grace Renners added seven points.
The Bulldogs were more efficient on both ends of the floor, shooting 43 percent from the field and committing only seven turnovers. Their offensive rating of 110.3 dwarfed Cornell’s mark of 62.1, illustrating the stark contrast in offensive execution.
The game was played before an announced attendance of 150.
Bryant’s next game is on the road against Marist on Tuesday. Cornell will look to rebound when it travels to face Pittsburgh, also on Tuesday.
