Brytnt Dominates Cornell in Women’s Basketball Season Opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Interstat) — The Bryant Bulldogs used a dominant defensive performance to overwhelm the Cornell Big Red, cruising to a 64-38 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Chace Athletic Center.

In a contest defined by stifling defense and offensive struggles for the visitors, Bryant improved its early season record to two wins and zero losses. Cornell, opening its campaign, fell to zero wins and one loss.

The Bulldogs seized control from the opening tip, establishing a 17-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Big Red’s offense never found its footing, mustering only 13 field goals on 50 attempts for a frigid 26 percent shooting performance from the floor. Cornell’s offensive woes were further highlighted by 15 turnovers and a paltry four assists, evidence of a disjointed attack stifled by Bryant’s pressure.

Bryant, conversely, operated with greater efficiency. The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field and capitalized on their opportunities, scoring 64 points on just 58 possessions for an offensive rating of 110.3. Cornell managed only 38 points from 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 62.1 that underscored the difficulty of the night.

The game’s statistical profile painted a clear picture of Bryant’s comprehensive victory. The Bulldogs out-assisted Cornell seven to four, out-stole them seven to four, and blocked five shots. They also won the battle on the glass, securing 11 offensive rebounds to Cornell’s 10. Most critically, Bryant committed only seven turnovers, more than halving Cornell’s giveaway total.

Nia Scott led the way for the Bulldogs, posting a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in 29 minutes of action. The 6-foot-1 forward from Medford Lakes, New Jersey, also contributed three assists and two blocks, anchoring Bryant’s efforts on both ends of the court.

She was complemented by a standout performance from guard Mia Mancini. The Mansfield, Massachusetts, native poured in a game-high 18 points while adding six rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes. Her backcourt mate, Izzy Adams of Walpole, Massachusetts, provided a spark off the bench with eight points and two assists in 16 minutes.

Bryant’s interior defense was fortified by Rose Nelson. The 6-foot-1 Australian recorded six points, five rebounds, two assists, and a team-high three blocks in 25 minutes. Martina Boba of Argentona, Spain, added five points in 31 minutes.

For Cornell, the bright spots were few. Emily Pape, a 6-foot-1 forward from Park Ridge, Illinois, led the Big Red with nine points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes. Grace Renners of Bellevue, Washington, added seven points and three rebounds. Kelsey Langston of Wilmette, Illinois, dished out three assists but was held to just two points in her 33 minutes on the floor. Vivienne Knee of New York, New York, contributed four points and five rebounds in a reserve role.

After building a 29-20 lead by halftime, Bryant put the game decisively out of reach in the third quarter. The Bulldogs erupted for 21 points while holding Cornell to 11, stretching their advantage to 50-31 entering the final period. The Big Red could not mount a challenge in the fourth, scoring only seven points as Bryant closed out the 26-point victory.

The result was largely in line with pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave Bryant a 72.30 percent probability of winning.

The Bulldogs will look to extend their winning streak when they hit the road to face Marist on Tuesday. Cornell, seeking its first win, continues a season-opening road trip at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The Big Red’s upcoming schedule includes games at Mercyhurst and at Canisius before their home opener against Colgate on Nov. 18. Bryant’s next homestand features a game against Rider on Nov. 15.
