Cincinnati at Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth offensive battle, the Penn State Lady Lions outlasted the Cincinnati Bearcats 82-77 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at Bryce Jordan Center.
The game featured 12 lead changes and eight ties, with Penn State ultimately pulling away in the final minutes to improve its record to 2-0. Cincinnati, coming off a narrow opening loss to Lehigh, fell to 0-2.
Penn State’s offensive efficiency proved decisive. The Lady Lions shot 49.3 percent from the floor, connecting on 33 of 67 attempts, and were a sharp 9 for 19 from three-point range. Cincinnati, despite taking 13 more shots, managed to hit only 30 of 80 from the field for a 37.5 percent clip. Both teams finished with 83 possessions, but Penn State’s superior shooting yielded a higher offensive rating of 99.1 compared to Cincinnati’s 93.1.
The contest was tight throughout the first half. Cincinnati opened the game with a potent first-quarter offensive display, pouring in 27 points, but Penn State kept pace with 25 of its own. The Bearcats led 41-40 at halftime after a lower-scoring second period.
The third quarter saw Penn State begin to create separation, outscoring Cincinnati 24-16 to take a 64-57 lead into the final frame. The Lady Lions maintained that advantage down the stretch, answering every Cincinnati push to secure the five-point victory.
Penn State was led by a dominant performance from Gracie Merkle, who posted a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Kiyomi McMiller facilitated the offense with a team-high 20 points and 7 assists. Moriah Murray provided a crucial scoring punch with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Tea Cleante added 14 points.

A key differentiator was Cincinnati’s work on the offensive boards, where they held a commanding 20-7 advantage, leading to 18 second-chance points. However, they were unable to overcome Penn State’s superior shooting and shot-blocking, as the Lady Lions recorded 7 blocks to Cincinnati’s 3.
The game drew an attendance of 1,609. Penn State next hosts Coppin State on Wednesday. Cincinnati looks for its first win on the road at Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday.
