Balanced Effort Leads Penn State Women Past Cincinnati in Home Opener

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth offensive battle, the Penn State Lady Lions outlasted the Cincinnati Bearcats 82 to 77 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at a sparse Bryce Jordan Center.

An announced crowd of 1,609 watched as the Lady Lions improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Bearcats, coming off a narrow opening loss to Lehigh, fell to 0-2.

The game was characterized by explosive runs and resilient responses, with neither team able to secure a comfortable lead until the final minutes. Penn State’s offensive efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc, proved to be the difference. The Lady Lions shot a blistering 47% from the floor and 9 for 19 from three-point range. Cincinnati, by contrast, struggled with its shooting, converting just 30 of its 80 field goal attempts for a 37.5% clip.

The first quarter set the tone for a high-scoring affair. Cincinnati came out firing, putting up 27 points in the opening period, led by early jumpers from Reagan Jackson and Caliyah DeVillasee. Penn State answered nearly every basket, scoring 25 of its own, largely through the interior dominance of Gracie Merkle and the transition play of Kiyomi McMiller. The period ended with the Bearcats clinging to a narrow two-point lead.

The pace slowed considerably in the second quarter as both defenses tightened. Cincinnati’s offensive output was nearly halved, scoring only 14 points, while Penn State managed just 15. The Bearcats’ shooting went cold, and despite a significant 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds for the game, they struggled to convert second-chance opportunities. The teams entered halftime with Cincinnati leading 41-40.

Emerging from the break, Penn State seized control with a 24-point third quarter. Moriah Murray caught fire from deep, hitting critical three-pointers, while Tea Cleante provided a steadying hand with timely steals and baskets. The Lady Lions’ defense also ramped up the pressure, forcing several Bearcat turnovers that led to easy scores. Cincinnati, despite 16 points in the quarter, could not stem the tide and found themselves trailing 64-57 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw Cincinnati mount a determined comeback. A pull-up jumper and a three-pointer from Reagan Jackson, followed by a driving layup from Mya Perry, kept the Bearcats within striking distance. However, every time Cincinnati threatened, Penn State had an answer. With just over a minute remaining and the shot clock winding down, Moriah Murray drained a clutch three-pointer off an assist from Gracie Merkle to extend the Lady Lions’ lead to 80-74.

Cincinnati had one last chance, cutting the deficit to three points on a Mya Perry three-pointer with just over a minute left. But Penn State’s Viktoria Ranisavljevic delivered the final dagger, converting a layup with 12 seconds left to seal the 82-77 victory.

Penn State was led by a balanced and potent offensive attack. Kiyomi McMiller filled the stat sheet with 20 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Gracie Merkle was a force in the paint, recording a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Moriah Murray added 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Tea Cleante chipped in 14 points.

For Cincinnati, Kylie Torrence from High Point, North Carolina, led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Caliyah DeVillasee of Owings Mills, Maryland, contributed 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Mya Perry from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, also scored 15. Alliance Ndiba, hailing from Lubumbashi, Congo, pulled down 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play.

Despite the loss, Cincinnati dominated the glass, outrebounding Penn State 53-35, including a staggering 20 offensive boards. However, the Bearcats’ 17 turnovers and lower shooting percentage ultimately undermined their efforts. Penn State’s ability to protect the rim was also a key factor, as they blocked 7 shots compared to Cincinnati’s 3.

Penn State will look to continue its winning streak when it hosts Coppin State on Wednesday. Cincinnati, still in search of its first win, will hit the road to face Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday.
