American Edges Lehigh in Patriot League Thriller
FOUNTAIN HILL, Pa. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the American Eagles, anchored by a career performance from Charlotte Tuhy, snapped a five-game losing streak and upended the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 62-60 in a Patriot League women’s basketball thriller Wednesday night at Stabler Arena.
The victory, secured in the frantic final seconds, marked a dramatic turnaround for an American team that entered the contest with a 6-22 record and had suffered a 28-point defeat to this same Lehigh squad just three weeks prior. The Mountain Hawks, who fell to 15-13, had been projected as overwhelming favorites.
The game’s climax was a tense, chaotic sequence over the final 24 seconds that saw multiple lead changes and crucial free throws decide the outcome. With American clinging to a 57-55 lead, Lehigh’s Leia Edwards was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to tie the game with 44 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, American’s Laura Nogues drove for a layup to put the Eagles back ahead 59-57 with 38 seconds left. Lehigh called timeout and set up a play for star guard Lily Fandre, but her turnaround jumper was off the mark. Nogues secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled by Alana Reddy with 5.5 seconds on the clock.
Nogues missed the first free throw but sank the second, pushing the American lead to 60-57. Lehigh, out of timeouts, rushed the ball upcourt. Fandre found Whitney Lind for a potential game-tying three-pointer, and Lind was fouled by Charlotte Tuhy on the attempt with 0.7 seconds remaining.
Lind, with ice in her veins, made all three free throws to improbably tie the game at 60-60. American inbounded to Tuhy, who was fouled by Fandre on a desperation heave with 0.5 seconds left. Tuhy, who had carried the Eagles all night, stepped to the line. She missed the first free throw but made the second, giving American a 61-60 lead.
A jump ball was called on the missed second shot, and the possession arrow favored American. Inbounding with 0.5 seconds left, American’s Nogues was fouled again. She made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, leaving Lehigh no time for a final shot as the horn sounded.
The frantic finish capped a game defined by American’s resilience. The Eagles built a 34-24 halftime lead behind a balanced attack, but Lehigh stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring American 17-10 to close the gap to 44-41 entering the final period. The Mountain Hawks finally took their first lead since the opening minutes at 50-47 on a Fandre three-pointer with 7:26 to play, setting the stage for the back-and-forth fourth quarter.
Tuhy, a junior from Madison, New Jersey, was the undeniable force for American. She played 36 minutes and scored a game-high 22 points, including the decisive free throw, while adding a block and three steals. Her backcourt mate, Laura Nogues of Sabadell, Spain, provided critical support with 13 points, including several key baskets in the final quarter. Anna Rescifina of Messina, Italy, added 11 points.
Lehigh was led by Lily Fandre of Eagan, Minnesota, who matched Tuhy’s intensity with 23 points. Leia Edwards of London, England, came off the bench to provide a vital spark with 13 points. The Mountain Hawks were hampered by 19 turnovers, which American converted into 18 points.
The Eagles improved to 7-22 overall, while Lehigh dropped to 15-13. The game was played before an intimate crowd of 665 at Stabler Arena. For American, the win represented a significant and hard-fought breakthrough in a difficult season, while Lehigh was left to rue missed opportunities and a costly final foul in a game they were expected to win comfortably.
