Navy Holds Off Colgate for Road Victory

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Zanai Barnett-Gay scored 31 points and Navy used a dominant first half to build an insurmountable lead, cruising to a 73-63 victory over Colgate in a Patriot League women’s basketball game Saturday at Cotterell Court.

The Midshipmen (20-7, 13-3) seized control from the opening tip, racing to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 44-26 by halftime. The 18-point cushion proved vital as the Raiders (6-21, 4-12) mounted a persistent second-half challenge but could never close the gap to single digits.

The most critical phase of the game was unquestionably the opening quarter, where Navy established its defensive intensity and offensive rhythm. The Midshipmen forced six Colgate turnovers in the first 10 minutes, converting them into transition opportunities that fueled their early 20-point outburst. This set a physical and tempo-based tone that Colgate, despite a more competitive second half, could never fully overcome.

Barnett-Gay, a 5-foot-8 guard from Glenn Dale, Maryland, was the engine for Navy, adding five assists and three steals to her game-high point total in 36 minutes. She consistently broke down the Colgate defense, scoring at the rim and drawing fouls, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Her performance came after a quieter offensive outing in Navy’s previous game, a 54-51 win at Army.

Navy’s defense was the story of the first half, generating 10 steals and forcing 18 Colgate turnovers for the game. The Midshipmen, despite shooting just 40.7% from the field (24 of 59) and 23.8% from three-point range (5 of 21), maximized their possessions. They attempted 17 more free throws than Colgate, making 20, and committed only seven turnovers.

Colgate, which shot a higher percentage from the field at 50.9% (27 of 53), was undone by its ball security and inability to get to the line. The Raiders attempted just 10 free throws, making six. Ella Meabon led Colgate with 19 points and three assists. Madison Schiller added 11 points and five assists, while Grace Klag and Christina Midgette each contributed 10 points.

The Raiders won the second-half scoring battle, 37-29, and trimmed the deficit to 12 points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer by Tatiana Matthews with 17 seconds remaining brought Colgate within the final 10-point margin, but the outcome had long been decided.

Navy’s victory completed a regular-season sweep of Colgate, having defeated the Raiders 66-38 in Annapolis just two weeks prior. It also kept the Midshipmen in contention near the top of the Patriot League standings with two games remaining in the regular season.

Colgate’s offense, which managed an offensive rating of 90.3 points per 100 possessions, was hampered by a lack of playmaking, tallying only four assists as a team. Navy, with a 100.2 offensive rating, shared the ball more effectively with 10 assists.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 424 at Cotterell Court. Navy will conclude its regular season at home against Loyola Maryland on Wednesday. Colgate will travel to face Lafayette the same night.
