Mavericks Edge Wolverines in Overtime Thriller
ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit over grace, the Texas-Arlington Mavericks escaped with a 60-59 overtime victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at College Park Center.
The contest, witnessed by 613 fans, was a defensive struggle where neither team could find consistent offensive rhythm. Both squads finished with identical 18 made field goals and 28 points in the paint, but the Mavericks leveraged a decisive advantage in points off turnovers, 25-11, to overcome a poor afternoon at the free-throw line where they shot just 21 of 32.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minutes of regulation and the extra period. Utah Valley, which had led for much of the second half, saw a 54-49 lead with under two minutes to play evaporate under a relentless Texas-Arlington press and a series of costly mistakes. The Mavericks closed the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run, capped by a driving layup from Kira Reynolds with 1:24 remaining that tied the game at 54. Utah Valley had two chances to win in the final seconds of regulation, but a turnover and a missed opportunity sent the game to overtime tied.
The overtime period was a microcosm of the entire game: a tense, low-scoring affair dominated by defense and free throws. Texas-Arlington scored all six of its overtime points at the foul line, while Utah Valley managed just a single field goal and three free throws. The Mavericks took the lead for good when Alexsyah Goudeau sank two free throws with 2:24 left in overtime to make it 58-56.
Utah Valley had two final possessions in the last 21 seconds to tie or take the lead. After a defensive stop, the Wolverines called timeout with 3.3 seconds left. The inbounds play went to Kaylee Headrick, whose contested step-back three-point attempt from the wing as time expired missed, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.
Kira Reynolds, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from South Bend, Indiana, led Texas-Arlington with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks, providing a crucial interior presence. She was complemented by Laura Bello, who also scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Bello’s performance was a significant bounce-back after being limited to just two points in each of her previous two games.
For Utah Valley, Cambree Blackham of Lehi, Utah, carried the offensive load, playing 42 minutes and scoring a game-high 19 points. Kaylee Headrick of Bluffdale, Utah, recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Wolverines were efficient from the free-throw line, making 19 of 22 attempts, but were undone by 21 Mavericks turnovers converting into only 11 points, while their own 15 turnovers led to 25 points for Texas-Arlington.
The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 17, a 59-47 Texas-Arlington win. This rematch was fiercely contested, featuring 15 ties and 14 lead changes. Utah Valley built its largest lead at seven points early in the third quarter, but could never put the Mavericks away.
With the win, Texas-Arlington improved to 10-13 overall, while Utah Valley fell to 9-12. The Mavericks defied the pre-game analytics from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave them a 78.5% probability to win, by barely surviving a determined Utah Valley effort. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Orem, Utah, on Feb. 21.
