Ohio State Routs Wisconsin in Big Ten Women’s Basketball

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter surge propelled the Ohio State Buckeyes to an 81-58 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in a Big Ten women’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Value City Arena.

The game, played before a crowd of 4,855, turned decisively after halftime. Ohio State outscored Wisconsin 27-17 in the third period, transforming a competitive contest into a comfortable lead. The Buckeyes’ offensive efficiency and defensive pressure proved overwhelming, as they forced 19 Wisconsin turnovers and converted them into 23 points.

Wisconsin started brightly, fueled by the hot shooting of Destiny Howell. The junior guard from Queens, New York, scored 29 points, including five 3-pointers, to keep the Badgers close early. Her efforts helped Wisconsin build a 23-17 lead after the first quarter. However, the Badgers’ offense stalled catastrophically in the second quarter, managing only five points as Ohio State clamped down defensively.

The Buckeyes’ star guard, Jaloni Cambridge, matched Howell’s game-high 29 points, adding two assists. Her backcourt partner, Ava Watson, orchestrated the offense with nine points and five assists while contributing to a stifling defensive effort that generated eight team steals. The interior was controlled by Ohio State’s Elsa Lemmilä, a 6-foot-6 freshman from Espoo, Finland, who recorded 14 points, four blocked shots and nine rebounds.

The most important sequence of the game occurred early in the third quarter. With Ohio State leading 32-28, the Buckeyes unleashed a 16-4 run over a four-minute span. The surge featured transition baskets fueled by steals, inside scores from Lemmilä and Cambridge, and a punctuating 3-pointer from Chance Gray, who finished with 10 points. This burst extended the lead to 48-32 and effectively put the game out of reach, as Wisconsin never cut the deficit below 14 points the rest of the way.

Wisconsin’s offensive struggles were pronounced beyond Howell’s scoring. The team shot just 39.3 percent from the field and a dismal 42.9 percent from the free-throw line. Their two total assists underscored the difficulty in generating clean looks against Ohio State’s active defense. Ronnie Porter of Saint Paul, Minnesota, added eight points for the Badgers.

Ohio State, meanwhile, operated with precision, posting an offensive rating of 111.0 points per 100 possessions. They shot 46.3 percent from the field and made 14 of 21 free throws. The Buckeyes also won the rebounding battle 41-34.

With the victory, Ohio State improved to 18-3 overall and remained near the top of the Big Ten standings. Wisconsin fell to 13-9, having lost two consecutive conference games.

Ohio State next hosts Nebraska on Sunday. Wisconsin returns home to face Indiana on Feb. 4.

The game’s outcome was in line with pregame expectations, as Ohio State was a 23.5-point favorite. The combined score of 139 points fell under the over/under line of 147.5.
