Oregon Holds Off Auburn for Road Win to Remain Undefeated

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by a decisive third-quarter surge, the Oregon Ducks remained undefeated Sunday, grinding out a 58-53 victory over the Auburn Tigers in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Auburn Arena.

A season-high crowd of 3,115 watched as the Ducks improved to 9-0, while the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 8-1.

The game was a tale of contrasting halves and pivotal runs. Oregon established an early lead, ending the first quarter with a 13-12 advantage. Auburn responded forcefully in the second period, outscoring the Ducks 21-11 to take a 33-24 lead into halftime. The Tigers’ momentum was fueled by a balanced attack and stifling defense that disrupted Oregon’s offensive rhythm.

The narrative flipped completely after the break. Oregon emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity, holding Auburn to a mere seven points in the third quarter. The Ducks’ own offense, which had sputtered before halftime, found its footing with a 16-point frame, erasing the deficit and seizing a 40-38 lead heading into the final period.

Oregon guard Katie Fiso was the catalyst for the comeback and the game’s standout performer. The sophomore from Seattle played 34 minutes and poured in a game-high 24 points, including several critical baskets in the second half to stymie Auburn rallies. She also added two assists and a block, controlling the tempo for the Ducks down the stretch.

Fiso received crucial support from forward Ehis Etute. The Luxembourg native contributed 16 points, with many coming on decisive drives to the basket, and anchored the paint defensively with two blocks. Forward Mia Jacobs of Perth, Australia, provided a steadying presence, logging 36 minutes and adding 10 points to complete a trio of double-figure scorers for Oregon.

For Auburn, the offensive struggles in the second half proved insurmountable. Mya Petticord led the Tigers with 13 points, while Angena Belloso of Spain provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, all scored in the first half. Harissoum Coulibaly added nine points for the Tigers, who saw their eight-game winning streak snapped.

The fourth quarter was a tense, back-and-forth affair. Each time Auburn threatened, Oregon had an answer, often from Fiso or Etute. The Ducks managed to build a small but persistent lead, forcing the Tigers into a fouling situation in the final minute.

With 19 seconds remaining and Oregon clinging to a narrow lead, Etute was fouled and calmly sank two free throws to extend the advantage. On the ensuing possession, Auburn’s Mya Petticord was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to keep the pressure on, cutting the deficit to three points with 14 seconds left.

Oregon inbounded the ball to Fiso, who was immediately fouled. She sealed the victory by making both free throws with 13 seconds on the clock, providing the final margin. A last-second three-point attempt from Auburn missed the mark, preserving the hard-fought road win for the Ducks.

The victory extends Oregon’s strong start to the season, which includes dominant wins over Old Dominion, Saint Mary’s, and Utah State in the past week. The Ducks now look ahead to a rivalry game against Oregon State on Wednesday.

Auburn, which had opened its season with eight consecutive wins including a road victory at California, will aim to rebound on the road at Syracuse on Wednesday.
