UC Davis at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Stanford women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a commanding advantage on the glass to remain undefeated, defeating the visiting UC Davis Aggies 70-45 on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.

A crowd of 2,228 watched as the Cardinal methodically built their lead, holding a 15-8 advantage after the first quarter and extending it to 35-19 by halftime. Stanford’s control continued after the break, outscoring the Aggies 21-14 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

The story of the game was Stanford’s stifling defense and UC Davis’s profound shooting struggles. The Aggies managed to convert just 13 of their 58 field goal attempts, a frigid 22.4 percent from the floor. They were only slightly better from beyond the arc, hitting 7 of 29 three-point attempts. Stanford’s interior defense was particularly effective, limiting UC Davis to just 12 points in the paint while scoring 32 of their own.

Stanford’s offense, while not spectacular from the field, was efficient and capitalized on second chances. The Cardinal shot 24 of 58 from the floor and 5 of 19 from three-point range. Their biggest advantage came at the free-throw line, where they made 17 of 21 attempts, and on the offensive glass, where they hauled in 15 rebounds compared to just five for UC Davis. This led to a significant disparity in possessions, with Stanford scoring 70 points on 63 possessions for an offensive rating of 111.2, while UC Davis managed only 45 points on 65 possessions, an offensive rating of 69.0.

The Cardinal offense was balanced, with four players scoring in double figures. Nunu Agara, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Minneapolis, led the way with 16 points. Lara Somfai, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Adelaide, Australia, added 14 points, and Chloe Clardy contributed 11 points, three assists and a block. Talana Lepolo directed the offense, dishing out three assists.

UC Davis was led by the scoring of Ryann Bennett, a 5-foot-8 guard from Long Beach, California, who finished with a game-high 19 points. Megan Norris, a 6-foot-3 player from nearby Menlo Park, California, provided a strong all-around effort with 13 points, three assists and four blocked shots.

Stanford committed 10 turnovers, leading to 11 points for the Aggies, while UC Davis gave the ball away only six times, resulting in eight points for the Cardinal.

With the victory, Stanford improved its season record to 6-0. The Cardinal are scheduled to host Lehigh on Sunday. UC Davis saw its record fall to 3-2. The Aggies will look to rebound on the road at Sacramento State on Monday.
