Stanford Remains Unbeaten With Dominant Win Over UC Davis
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Stanford women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a commanding advantage on the glass to remain undefeated with a 70-45 victory over UC Davis on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
A crowd of 2,228 watched the Cardinal methodically pull away from the Aggies, improving their record to 6-0 while handing UC Davis its second loss against three wins.
The game was ultimately decided by a stark contrast in offensive efficiency and rebounding prowess. Stanford scored its 70 points on just 63 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 111.2, while UC Davis managed only 45 points on 65 possessions for a rating of 69.0. The Cardinal also crushed the Aggies on the offensive glass, hauling in 15 offensive rebounds to UC Davis’s five, which led to numerous second-chance opportunities.
Stanford’s control of the game was established early. After a slow start from both teams, the Cardinal closed the first quarter on a 12-4 run to take a 15-8 lead. They extended that lead to 35-19 by halftime, outscoring the Aggies 20-11 in the second period. The Cardinal continued to build their advantage after the break, leading 56-33 heading into the final quarter.
The Aggies struggled mightily from the field all night, shooting just 22 percent, making only 13 of their 58 attempts. Their saving grace was a 92 percent performance from the free-throw line, where they converted 12 of 13 shots. Stanford, by comparison, shot 41 percent from the floor and 81 percent from the line.
Stanford’s offensive attack was balanced and multifaceted. Nunu Agara, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Minneapolis, led the Cardinal with 16 points. She was complemented by Lara Somfai, a 6-3 freshman from Adelaide, Australia, who added 14 points and was a force on the boards. Chloe Clardy, a 5-9 guard from Conway, Arkansas, chipped in 11 points.
Despite the lopsided score, UC Davis had a standout performance from Ryann Bennett. The 5-8 guard from Long Beach played 36 minutes and poured in a game-high 19 points, accounting for nearly half of her team’s total offense. Megan Norris, a 6-3 center from Menlo Park, California, was also a bright spot for the Aggies, contributing 13 points and swatting away four Stanford shot attempts.
The Cardinal’s defense was relentless, holding UC Davis to just 12 points in the paint compared to their own 32. Stanford also capitalized on Aggie mistakes, scoring 11 points off turnovers.
With the victory, Stanford continues its strong start to the season, which includes recent road wins at Gonzaga and Washington State. They will look to extend their winning streak when they host Lehigh on Sunday.
UC Davis, which had previously defeated Idaho and Weber State before falling to Boise State, will try to rebound on the road against Sacramento State on Monday.
