Wagner at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Syracuse women’s basketball team remained undefeated Sunday, delivering a dominant 78-29 victory over Wagner at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Seahawks fell to 1-3 before an announced crowd of 2,351.

Syracuse’s defense was suffocating from the opening tip, setting the tone for a lopsided affair. The Orange held Wagner to just four points in the first quarter, building a 22-4 lead and never looking back. The defensive pressure continued, as Syracuse forced numerous turnovers and converted them into 28 points off those miscues, compared to just six for the visitors. The Seahawks were held to single-digit scoring in two of the four quarters.

Offensively, the Orange displayed a balanced and efficient attack. Laila Phelia, a guard from Cincinnati, Ohio, led all scorers with 15 points in just 18 minutes of action. She was instrumental in the first-half surge that put the game out of reach.

Syracuse received significant contributions from its frontcourt as well. Oyindamola Akinbolawa, a 6-foot-5 freshman from Lagos, Nigeria, was a force inside, just missing a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. Fellow Australian Sophie Burrows added 11 points and four rebounds, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor.

The Orange shared the wealth, with eight different players scoring at least five points. The team also controlled the interior, outscoring Wagner 30-20 on points in the paint.

For Wagner, the struggles were comprehensive against Syracuse’s relentless defense. Hawa Balde-Camara, a 6-foot-4 forward from Barcelona, Spain, led the Seahawks with six rebounds and a blocked shot, but the team could not find any consistent offensive rhythm.

The game was the fourth in a challenging early-season stretch for Wagner, which has faced three power-conference opponents. Syracuse, meanwhile, continued its strong start, having won each of its first four games by at least 19 points.

Syracuse is scheduled to travel to Montville, Connecticut, for its next contest against Utah on Friday. Wagner will return home to host Lafayette on Thursday.
