Syracuse women roll past Wagner in lopsided victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Syracuse women’s basketball team delivered a commanding defensive performance, overwhelming the Wagner Seahawks 78-29 in a nonconference game Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

The Orange improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Seahawks fell to 1-3 in front of an announced crowd of 2,351.

Syracuse’s defense was the story from the opening tip, setting a suffocating tone that Wagner never managed to counter. The Orange forced the Seahawks into a series of early turnovers and contested shots, holding them to just four points in the first quarter. Syracuse capitalized on those mistakes, scoring 28 points off turnovers for the game, compared to just six for Wagner.

The first quarter laid the foundation for the lopsided affair. After Wagner’s Keana Foz scored the game’s first basket on a layup, Syracuse responded with a 20-2 run to close the period, leading 22-4. The Orange defense was relentless, blocking shots and generating steals that led to easy transition opportunities. Izoje Uche was a force inside early, recording a block and multiple rebounds in the opening minutes.

The onslaught continued in the second quarter. Syracuse maintained its defensive pressure, extending the lead to 43-17 by halftime. Wagner found slightly more offensive success with 13 points in the period, but could not slow down the Orange’s balanced attack.

Syracuse’s dominance was reflected in the paint, where they outscored Wagner 30-20, and in their ability to convert Wagner’s miscues into points at the other end of the floor.

The third quarter saw Syracuse put the game completely out of reach, holding the Seahawks to another four-point period while adding 22 points to their own total. The Orange lead ballooned to 65-21 heading into the final frame, allowing for extensive use of the bench throughout the second half.

Laila Phelia led all scorers for Syracuse, contributing 15 points in just 18 minutes of action. Sophie Burrows provided a strong all-around performance with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists. Oyindamola Akinbolawa was a presence in the post, just missing a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, while also adding a block.

For Wagner, Hawa Balde-Camara battled inside, pulling down a team-high six rebounds to go with four points and a block in 20 minutes. The Seahawks struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against the swarming Orange defense.

The victory extends Syracuse’s strong start to the season, having previously defeated Canisius, Albany and Stony Brook by an average of 30 points. Wagner, coming off a 20-point loss to NJIT, has now faced three straight road losses against higher-division opponents after a season-opening win over SUNY New Paltz.

Syracuse is scheduled to travel to Montville, Connecticut, to face Utah on Friday. Wagner will return home to host Lafayette on Thursday.
