Wagner at Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Interstat) — The undefeated Syracuse women’s basketball team looks to continue its strong start to the season when it hosts Wagner on Sunday at the Carrier Dome.
The Orange (3-0) have won their first three games by an average of 28.3 points, most recently a 96-72 victory over Canisius on Tuesday. Syracuse’s offense has been powered by a potent backcourt duo of Laila Phelia, who scored 22 points in the last outing, and Dominique Darius, who added 21 points.
Wagner (1-2) arrives after a 78-58 road loss to NJIT on Tuesday. The Seahawks’ lone win was an 88-46 rout of SUNY New Paltz on Nov. 5, but they fell by 29 points at Rutgers in their season opener. Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor led the Seahawks with 15 points in the loss to NJIT.
Syracuse’s defense has been stifling, holding its first three opponents to an average of 55.7 points per game. They will be heavily favored against a Wagner team that has struggled offensively in its two losses, scoring just 50 and 58 points.
The game is the first of a two-game homestand for the Orange before they head to Connecticut for a pair of neutral-site games next week. Wagner continues a challenging early-season road stretch before returning home to face Lafayette on Thursday.
