Ohio State at Connecticut
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The Connecticut Huskies delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon, overwhelming the Ohio State Buckeyes 100-68 in a non-conference women’s basketball showdown before a crowd of 14,115 at the XL Center.
The Huskies improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Buckeyes fell to 2-1.
Connecticut’s dominance was established early and never relented. The Huskies led 27-24 after a competitive first quarter but seized complete control in the second period, outscoring Ohio State 23-6. A suffocating defense fueled the run, as Connecticut forced a series of Buckeye turnovers and converted them into easy transition baskets. The Huskies scored 37 points off turnovers for the game, compared to just 13 for Ohio State.
Sarah Strong, the standout forward from Durham, N.C., was the engine for Connecticut, posting a monumental stat line of 29 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks in 32 minutes. Her all-around game set the tone, facilitating the offense and anchoring the defense.
She was complemented by a sharp-shooting backcourt. Guard Azzi Fudd of Arlington, Va., scored 19 points and dished out 7 assists, while Blanca Quinonez, a guard from Milagro, Ecuador, provided a significant spark off the bench with 18 points. The Huskies’ offense was brutally efficient inside, outscoring the Buckeyes 54-28 in the paint.
Ohio State was led by guard Jaloni Cambridge of Nashville, Tenn., who scored 17 points. Forward Kylee Kitts of Oviedo, Fla., added 9 points and 10 rebounds, but the Buckeyes struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Connecticut’s relentless pressure. A critical six-point second quarter proved insurmountable.
The Huskies stretched their lead to 79-51 by the end of the third quarter and continued to pull away in the final period, with the margin reaching its peak at the final buzzer.
Connecticut next travels to face Michigan on Friday, Nov. 21. Ohio State looks to rebound at home against Kent State on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
