Huskies Dominate Buckeyes Behind Strong’s Stellar Performance
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Connecticut Huskies remained undefeated Sunday, overwhelming the visiting Ohio State Buckeyes 100-68 in a non-conference women’s basketball game before a crowd of 14,115 at the XL Center.
The Huskies improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Buckeyes fell to 2-1.
Freshman forward Sarah Strong, a Durham, N.C. native, delivered a dominant performance for Connecticut, posting a stat line of 29 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks in 32 minutes. Her all-around game set the tone as the Huskies capitalized on a disastrous second quarter for the Buckeyes to pull away decisively.
Ohio State started the game with surprising offensive efficiency, trading baskets with the Huskies throughout a high-scoring first quarter. The Buckeyes, led by guard Jaloni Cambridge’s early scoring, put up 24 points in the opening period. However, Connecticut’s offense was even more potent, scoring 27 points to take a narrow lead.
The game turned completely in the second quarter. Ohio State’s offense went ice-cold, managing a mere six points while turning the ball over repeatedly. Connecticut’s defense smothered the Buckeyes, converting those miscues into easy transition baskets. The Huskies erupted for 23 points in the frame, building a 50-30 halftime lead from which Ohio State would never recover.
The statistical disparity was stark. Connecticut scored 37 points off Ohio State turnovers, compared to just 13 for the Buckeyes. The Huskies also dominated the interior, outscoring Ohio State 54-28 in the paint.
While Strong was the headliner, she had plenty of support. Guard Azzi Fudd of Arlington, Va., contributed 19 points and 7 assists, expertly running the Huskies’ offense. Guard Blanca Quinonez, from Milagro, Ecuador, provided a significant spark off the bench with 18 points. Forward Serah Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y., added 12 points, and guard Ashlynn Shade of Noblesville, Ind., chipped in 10 points and 4 assists.
For Ohio State, Cambridge, a guard from Nashville, Tenn., led the way with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Kylee Kitts of Oviedo, Fla., battled inside for 9 points and 10 rebounds, while Kennedy Cambridge, also of Nashville, added 10 points.
Any hope of an Ohio State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as Connecticut poured in another 29 points, extending its lead to 79-51. The Huskies’ lead ballooned to as many as 35 points in the fourth quarter as both teams emptied their benches.
The game’s total score of 168 points significantly surpassed the over/under line of 141.5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Connecticut with a 96.3 percent probability to win.
Ohio State will look to rebound on Wednesday when it hosts Kent State. Connecticut’s next contest is on the road Friday against Michigan in a game played at Montville, Conn.
