Western Michigan at Michigan State
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — The Michigan State Spartans delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Events Center, overwhelming the visiting Western Michigan Broncos 98-44 in a non-conference women’s basketball game.
From the opening tip, the Spartans established a dominant tone, racing out to a 31-5 lead after the first quarter. The offensive onslaught was fueled by a stifling defense that forced the Broncos into 26 turnovers, which Michigan State converted into 39 points. The Spartans also controlled the interior, outscoring Western Michigan 68-20 in the paint.
Michigan State’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, shooting 53 percent from the floor on 41-of-78 shooting. The Spartans also dished out 17 assists while committing only four turnovers, showcasing a stark contrast in ball security compared to their opponents.
Grace VanSlooten led a balanced and potent Spartan attack with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks in just 22 minutes of action. Kennedy Blair filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Rashunda Jones contributed 13 points and three assists, while Isaline Alexander provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring a team-high 20 points in only 11 minutes on the floor.
Western Michigan struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Michigan State’s pressure, shooting 31 percent from the field and finishing with more than twice as many turnovers as made field goals. The Broncos were led by De’Ahna Richardson, who scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Ariana Wilkes pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for Western Michigan.
After the explosive first quarter, Michigan State took its foot off the gas slightly in the second, being outscored 17-14, but still carried a 45-22 lead into halftime. Any hope of a Broncos comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as the Spartans erupted for 33 points to put the game completely out of reach.
