Michigan State Routs Western Michigan in Lopsided Women’s Basketball Contest
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Michigan State Spartans delivered a commanding 98-44 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Events Center.
The Spartans improved to 4-0 on the young season, while the Broncos fell to 1-3.
From the opening tip, Michigan State established a dominant tone, racing out to a 31-5 lead after the first quarter. The Spartans’ suffocating defense forced the Broncos into a series of early turnovers, which were quickly converted into easy baskets. Western Michigan struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the relentless pressure.
While the Broncos showed a flicker of resistance in the second quarter, outscoring Michigan State 17-14, the Spartans extinguished any doubt with a devastating 33-7 third-quarter performance, stretching their lead to an insurmountable 78-29 margin.
The statistical sheet painted a clear picture of the lopsided affair. Michigan State’s defense was the story of the game, forcing Western Michigan into 26 turnovers while committing only four themselves. The Spartans capitalized on those mistakes, scoring 39 points off turnovers compared to just one for the Broncos. Michigan State also recorded 17 steals and seven blocked shots.
Offensively, the Spartans were ruthlessly efficient, shooting 53 percent from the floor and scoring 68 points in the paint. They assisted on 17 of their 41 made field goals, showcasing a fluid and unselfish offensive system.
Western Michigan, by contrast, managed to shoot only 31 percent from the field and recorded a mere two assists for the entire game against the swarming Michigan State defense.
Michigan State’s attack was balanced and potent, led by a standout performance from Grace VanSlooten. The 6-foot-3 forward from Toledo, Ohio, scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out four assists in just 22 minutes of action, also adding three blocks.
She was complemented by the all-around play of Kennedy Blair. The 5-foot-9 guard from Dearborn, Michigan, filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Rashunda Jones, a 5-foot-8 guard from South Bend, Indiana, provided 13 points and three assists.
Perhaps the most efficient performance came from Isaline Alexander. The 6-foot-3 forward from Keswick, Canada, needed only 11 minutes to pour in a game-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field.
For Western Michigan, De’Ahna Richardson led the way with 11 points and six rebounds. Ariana Wilkes battled inside for a game-high 10 rebounds to go with four points.
A crowd of 3,653 watched as the Spartans continued their strong start to the season, having won each of their first four games by at least 32 points. Western Michigan, coming off a narrow one-point victory over Milwaukee, was unable to sustain any momentum against the formidable Big Ten opponent.
The Spartans will look to continue their winning ways when they host Eastern Illinois on Thursday. Western Michigan returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, against Roosevelt.
