Holman Leads Trojans Past Cougars in Home Victory
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Interstat) — Jordan Holman scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Brenna Burk added 19 points, and Arkansas-Little Rock pulled away late to defeat SIU Edwardsville 73-64 in a women’s college basketball game Saturday at Jack Stephens Center.
The Trojans, who evened their overall record at 12-12, used a decisive 9-2 run over the final two minutes to finally subdue a persistent Cougars squad that had whittled a double-digit deficit down to a single possession.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded with just over a minute to play and Little Rock clinging to a 68-66 lead. After SIU Edwardsville’s Macy Silvey missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer, the Trojans secured the defensive rebound. On the ensuing possession, Blessing Teamer found Pearson McVay for a layup with 52 seconds remaining, pushing the lead to four. Silvey then committed a foul on Holman, who made one of two free throws. Following a missed 3-pointer by the Cougars, Burk was fouled and sank two clutch free throws with 19 seconds left, extending the lead to 73-66 and effectively sealing the victory.
Holman, a 5-foot-10 guard from Hugo, Oklahoma, was dominant throughout, logging 38 minutes and recording her first double-double of the season. She was efficient from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Burk, from Russellville, Arkansas, provided crucial scoring support, including seven points in the final period.
SIU Edwardsville, which fell to 10-14, was led by a balanced effort. Kiyoko Proctor scored 13 points, while Lauren Miller and Macy Silvey each added 11. Syanne Mohamed grabbed 10 rebounds. The Cougars struggled offensively, shooting just 36% from the field and committing 10 turnovers against only three assists.
The game was a defensive struggle early, with both teams shooting under 40% in the first half. Little Rock took a 29-25 lead into halftime, but the Cougars stayed within striking distance by winning the rebounding battle and capitalizing on Trojan miscues.
The third quarter saw the Trojans begin to create separation. A 3-pointer from Holman in the final seconds of the period capped a 7-2 spurt and gave Little Rock a 49-43 advantage heading into the fourth.
SIU Edwardsville refused to go away, mounting several rallies in the final quarter. A layup by Proctor with 4:40 left cut the deficit to 58-56, and a pair of free throws from Jaiden Bryant made it 66-64 with 1:58 remaining. But the Cougars could not get the necessary stop or basket on their next two possessions, allowing Little Rock to initiate the game-clinching run from the free-throw line.
The Trojans finished the game shooting 42.6% from the field and were bolstered by a 17-for-23 performance at the foul line. They also held a 34-28 advantage in points in the paint. SIU Edwardsville’s offensive rating of 89.5 on 72 possessions underscored their shooting difficulties, while Little Rock posted a more efficient 102.9 rating on 71 trips.
The win gave Little Rock a regular-season sweep of the Cougars, having also won 48-45 in Edwardsville on Jan. 8. It also snapped a brief two-game skid for the Trojans, who were coming off a lopsided loss to Lindenwood.
SIU Edwardsville, which has lost four of its last five, continues its road swing next Thursday at Southeast Missouri State. Arkansas-Little Rock hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Western Illinois on Thursday.
