UNC Asheville at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging High Point women’s basketball team will look to close its nonconference schedule with a 12th victory when it hosts struggling UNC Asheville in a Big South matchup on Wednesday at Qubein Arena.
The Panthers (11-2) have won nine of their last 10 games, most recently edging Yale 85-83 in double-overtime on Dec. 20. High Point’s offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in six games this season.
High Point is led by standout forward Nevaeh Zavala, who posted a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double in the win over Yale. Zavala averages 12.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and will be a primary focus for the Bulldogs’ defense.
UNC Asheville (4-8) seeks consistency after a lopsided 94-39 victory over Simmons on Dec. 17 snapped a three-game skid. The Bulldogs have struggled on the road, going 1-5 away from home this season.
The Bulldogs will rely on guard Nia Green, who scored 22 points in just 23 minutes against Simmons. Green has been a bright spot, averaging 16.3 points over her last five contests, including a 15-point, 10-rebound performance in an overtime win over South Carolina State on Dec. 3.
This game opens Big South play for both teams. High Point’s strong start, which includes wins over East Carolina and Vermont, positions it as an early conference favorite. UNC Asheville aims to leverage its defensive pressure, as the Bulldogs have held opponents under 65 points in three of their four wins.
The Panthers won both meetings last season. Wednesday’s contest is the final tune-up before full conference play resumes in January.
