High Point Routs UNC Asheville in Big South Women’s Basketball Opener

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers closed the calendar year with a dominant defensive performance, overwhelming the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 78-51 in a Big South Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Qubein Arena.

High Point, improving to 12-2 overall, set the tone from the opening tip, forcing a staggering 24 turnovers and converting them into 28 points. The Panthers’ relentless pressure, particularly in the first half, rendered any notion of a competitive contest moot early on. UNC Asheville, which fell to 5-9, managed just 21 first-half points and never recovered from High Point’s initial onslaught.

The most important part of the game was the first quarter, where High Point established a commanding and ultimately insurmountable lead. The Panthers exploded for 25 points in the opening period while their defense completely stifled the Bulldogs’ offense. UNC Asheville committed eight turnovers in the quarter alone, leading directly to 10 High Point points. The Panthers shot 10 of 18 from the field in the frame, building a 25-11 lead that set the trajectory for the entire evening. That early 14-point deficit ballooned to 46-21 by halftime, effectively deciding the outcome before the teams retreated to the locker room.

High Point’s backcourt duo of Aaliyah Collins and Macy Spencer proved unstoppable, each finishing with 25 points. Collins, a 5-foot-6 guard from Snohomish, Washington, filled the stat sheet beyond her scoring, adding five rebounds, six assists and four blocks in 28 minutes. Her defensive activity was pivotal, contributing to four of the team’s 13 steals. Spencer, a 5-8 guard from Katy, Texas, was lethally efficient, hitting 10 of her 17 shot attempts, including three from beyond the arc, in just 24 minutes of play.

The Panthers’ offensive efficiency, measured by an offensive rating of 96.1 points per 100 possessions, starkly contrasted with the Bulldogs’ struggles. UNC Asheville posted an offensive rating of just 64.3, shooting 31.8% from the field and committing those 24 turnovers against only eight assists. The Panthers also dominated inside, outscoring Asheville 42-24 in the paint.

Nia Green led UNC Asheville with 15 points and five rebounds. Jamaria Freeman posted a unique line of eight points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks, but also turned the ball over seven times against the constant defensive harassment.

High Point’s victory was its fourth in a row and continued a strong start to conference play. The Panthers entered the game as overwhelming favorites according to advanced metrics, and they performed to that expectation from the opening whistle. The Bulldogs, coming off a 53-point win over Division III Brevard, found the competition level significantly heightened and were unable to cope with High Point’s speed and defensive intensity.

An announced crowd of 780 watched as High Point methodically extended its lead through the third quarter before both teams emptied their benches in the final period. The Panthers now look ahead to a road game at South Carolina Upstate on Saturday. UNC Asheville returns home to host Winthrop, also on Saturday, seeking to rebound in conference play.
