McNeese State at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by turnovers and missed opportunities, McNeese State edged Tarleton State in a low-scoring women’s basketball contest Sunday at Wisdom Gym.

The game was a tale of two contrasting strengths. McNeese State’s victory was fueled by a disruptive defense that forced 17 Tarleton State turnovers, converting those into 19 points. The Cowgirls also dominated inside, outscoring the Texans 38-22 in the paint. Conversely, Tarleton State’s offense sputtered, managing only two assists against its 17 giveaways, though they found a slight edge from beyond the arc, making six three-pointers to McNeese State’s one.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair throughout. Tarleton State held a narrow 13-12 lead after the first quarter, but a sluggish second quarter in which they scored only nine points allowed McNeese State to take a 22-20 lead into halftime. The Texans responded after the break, using a 15-point third quarter to reclaim a 37-33 advantage heading into the final period.

McNeese State saved its best offensive output for the fourth, pouring in 16 points to mount a comeback. The game culminated in a dramatic final sequence. With 11 seconds remaining and the scored tied, McNeese State guard Jalencia Pierre secured a defensive rebound and immediately found a streaking Tyreona Sibley for a go-ahead layup. Tarleton State called a timeout to advance the ball but could not get a final shot to fall, sealing the two-point victory for the visitors.

Pierre, a 5-foot-5 guard from Springfield, Louisiana, led the Cowgirls with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes of action. Forward Lexi Alexander of Round Rock, Texas, added 11 points and four rebounds. For Tarleton State, center Elodie Lutbert provided a crucial spark off the bench, scoring a team-high 14 points and grabbing six rebounds in just 17 minutes, also recording three blocks. Guard Gia Adams from Houston also finished with 12 points.

The win improves McNeese State’s record to 2-1 on the young season, while Tarleton State falls to 2-3. The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 953. McNeese State will next host LSU-Alexandria on Saturday, while Tarleton State travels to face Texas Christian on Thursday.
