STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by grit over grace, the McNeese State Cowgirls edged the Tarleton State Texans 49-47 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Wisdom Gym.

The contest, played before an announced crowd of 953, was a stark contrast in styles. McNeese State leveraged a relentless defense that forced 17 Tarleton State turnovers, converting those miscues into 19 points, while the Texans managed just 4 points off 8 Cowgirls turnovers. That disparity proved to be the decisive factor in a game where offensive efficiency was at a premium.

McNeese State’s backcourt pressure was the engine of its victory. The Cowgirls recorded 11 steals and 11 assists, showcasing a disruptive defensive presence that consistently threw the Texans’ offense out of rhythm. The Texans responded after the break, outscoring the Cowgirls 15-11 in the third quarter to carry a 37-34 lead into the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw McNeese State mount its decisive push. The Cowgirls’ defense tightened, and their interior offense finally found consistent success, outscoring Tarleton State 16-10 over the final 10 minutes. The game came down to the final possession. With 11 seconds remaining and the scored tied at 47, McNeese State guard Jalencia Pierre found teammate Tyreona Sibley for a go-ahead layup.

Tarleton State had one final opportunity, but a three-point attempt by Gia Adams missed as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the visiting Cowgirls.
