UC Davis Holds Off Cal Poly in Defensive Big West Battle

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle where offensive rhythm was a rare commodity, the UC Davis women’s basketball team leaned on its star guard to navigate to a narrow victory. Ryann Bennett scored a game-high 20 points, including several crucial baskets down the stretch, to lift the Aggies to a 59-55 win over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference game Saturday at a sparsely attended Robert Mott Gym.

The game, played before a crowd of 528, was a stark contrast to the teams’ meeting just four weeks prior, a 26-point UC Davis rout. This contest was defined by missed shots, turnovers, and physical defense from the opening tip. Both teams finished with identical offensive ratings of 83.6 and 83.8, respectively, and combined to shoot just 33% from the field. Each team also committed 14 turnovers and recorded only four assists, underscoring the disjointed nature of the play.

Cal Poly, despite entering with a 3-19 record, proved a stubborn opponent, particularly in the paint where they out-rebounded UC Davis 11-4 on the offensive glass. The Mustangs were led by Charish Thompson, who matched Bennett with 20 points of her own, often battling through contact to keep her team within striking distance.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute, with UC Davis clinging to a precarious lead. After a Dulci Vail offensive foul and turnover gave the Aggies possession with 39 seconds left and a 52-50 advantage, the Mustangs were forced to foul. Ryann Bennett, the 5-foot-8 guard from Long Beach, California, was sent to the line with 33 seconds remaining. She calmly sank both free throws, extending the lead to four points.

Cal Poly answered quickly, with Arissa Garcia driving for a layup to cut the deficit back to 54-52 with just 33 seconds on the clock. Following a UC Davis timeout, the Aggies executed a critical inbounds play. Bennett found Tegan Young open on the wing, and the 6-foot-1 forward from Leominster, Massachusetts, drained a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining, pushing the lead to 57-52 and effectively sealing the outcome. Young’s clutch shot was her only made three-pointer of the game on six attempts and provided the decisive cushion.

The Mustangs had one final chance, but Garcia’s jumper missed, and after a scramble for the rebound, Cal Poly was forced to foul Bennett again with mere tenths of a second remaining. She made both free throws to provide the final margin.

The game did not start with any indication of a dramatic finish. Cal Poly controlled the first quarter, taking a 16-12 lead behind eight points from Thompson. The Aggies responded with a dominant 22-point second quarter, fueled by a 12-4 run that turned a 21-18 deficit into a 30-25 lead. Bennett and Avery Sussex, who finished with nine points and five assists, connected on key three-pointers during the surge, and a Sophie Lentfer triple just before the halftime buzzer sent UC Davis into the break with a 34-27 advantage.

The Mustangs chipped away in the third, closing the quarter on a 7-2 run to trim the Aggies’ lead to 45-42. The fourth quarter became a possession-by-possession fight. Cal Poly tied the game at 46-46 on a Thompson jumper with 6:06 remaining, and again at 48-48 on a Vanessa McManus shot with 4:13 left. Each time, UC Davis had an answer, usually from Bennett or a key defensive stop. A Bennett driving layup and free throw with 2:50 to go gave the Aggies a 51-48 lead they would not relinquish, setting the stage for the final minute heroics.

Beyond Bennett and Thompson, Alana Goosby provided eight points and four assists for Cal Poly, while Avery Sussex’s floor generalship was vital for UC Davis. Megan Norris added eight points and nine rebounds for the Aggies.

With the win, UC Davis improved to 17-7 overall and maintained its position in the upper tier of the Big West standings. Cal Poly fell to 3-20, showing significant fight despite the losing result. The Aggies will look to build on the hard-fought road victory when they host UC San Diego on Thursday. Cal Poly travels to face UC Irvine on the same night.
