Megan Norris Leads UC Davis to Road Win Over UC San Diego
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Megan Norris scored 23 points and UC Davis withstood a late rally to edge UC San Diego 66-62 in a pivotal Big West Conference women’s basketball clash on Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.
The Aggies, who led for the final 32 minutes, saw a 13-point fourth-quarter advantage nearly evaporate in the final minute before securing the road victory. The win improved UC Davis to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Tritons fell to 12-6 and 4-2.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the frantic final 30 seconds. Holding a 60-57 lead, UC Davis’s Megan Norris was fouled and made both free throws with 22 seconds remaining to push the advantage to five. UC San Diego’ Erin Condron answered with a clutch 3-pointer just four seconds later, assisted by Dymonique Maxie, slicing the deficit to 62-60 and forcing an Aggies timeout.
Out of the break, the Tritons immediately fouled Norris again. The 6-foot-3 junior from Menlo Park, California, calmly sank both attempts, restoring a four-point cushion with 22 seconds left. UC San Diego had two chances to draw closer, but Rosa Smith missed a 3-pointer and, after Sabrina Ma’s offensive rebound and putback made it 64-62, the Tritons were forced to foul again. UC Davis guard Ryann Bennett sealed the game by making two free throws with 10 seconds left for the final margin.
Norris was the dominant force throughout, adding three assists and three blocks in 37 minutes. Her interior presence on both ends helped the Aggies overcome a sluggish start. UC San Diego raced to a 21-11 lead after the first quarter, powered by early transitions and nine points from Condron. The Aggies responded with a commanding 22-point second quarter, spearheaded by Norris, to take a 33-38 halftime lead. They extended that lead to 44-38 after three quarters before their 22-point fourth quarter ultimately proved enough.
Erin Condron led UC San Diego with 21 points and four assists. Rosa Smith added 15 points, and Makayla Rose finished with 12 points and a game-high 40 minutes. The Tritons were hurt by 18 turnovers and a 4-of-24 shooting performance from 3-point range in the second half.
For UC Davis, Tegan Young contributed 11 points, and Ryann Bennett added 10 points and three assists. The Aggies won despite committing 22 turnovers, thanks to a 46-32 advantage in rebounds and Norris’s efficiency.
The game drew an attendance of 537. According to Interstat’s ELO system, UC San Diego entered with a 64.7 percent probability to win.
