Weber State at BYU
PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — A dominant second-half performance propelled the undefeated BYU women’s basketball team to a 79-62 victory over in-state foe Weber State on Saturday afternoon at a sparsely attended Marriott Center.
The Cougars, now 6-0, used a decisive 23-point third quarter to pull away from the Wildcats, who fell to 2-3. The game was a tale of offensive efficiency, with BYU capitalizing on its possessions at a much higher rate than its opponent.
Weber State started strong, holding a 19-16 lead after the first quarter and staying within three points at halftime, trailing 38-35. The Wildcats’ effort was led by a stellar all-around performance from Antoniette Emma-Nnopu, who finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Hannah Robbins was the game’s leading scorer, pouring in 19 points for Weber State.
However, the Cougars seized control after the break. Their offense, which had been efficient in the first half, became nearly unstoppable in the third period. BYU shot the ball effectively all afternoon, finishing 24 of 52 from the floor and a sharp 9 of 22 from three-point range. A significant advantage came at the free-throw line, where the Cougars made 22 of their 27 attempts, while Weber State attempted only 11 free throws, making eight.
BYU’s attack was balanced, with four players scoring in double figures. Lara Rohkohl led the way with 18 points, while Marya Hudgins added 11. Arielle Mackey-Williams and Brinley Cannon chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sydney Benally facilitated the offense with a game-high nine assists.
The Cougars’ defense also played a pivotal role, forcing 20 Weber State turnovers and converting them into 13 points. BYU also recorded eight steals and four blocks. Weber State struggled from beyond the arc, making just 4 of 22 three-point attempts, which hampered their ability to keep pace in the second half.
Despite the loss, Weber State won the battle in the paint, outscoring BYU 36-30.
The game was part of a busy non-conference schedule for both teams. BYU, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to statistical projections, will next travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a multi-game event. Weber State looks to rebound on the road against Utah.
