BYU Women Pull Away From Weber State to Remain Undefeated

PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — The BYU Cougars used a dominant second half and a significant advantage at the free-throw line to pull away from the Weber State Wildcats for a 79-62 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at a sparsely attended Marriott Center.

A crowd of 2,291 watched the Cougars remain undefeated on the season, improving to 6-0, while the Wildcats fell to 2-3.

The game was a tale of contrasting offensive efficiency. Despite making one more field goal than BYU, Weber State’s offense was plagued by turnovers and poor three-point shooting. The Wildcats turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 13 points for BYU, and shot a frigid 4 for 22 from beyond the arc. BYU capitalized on its opportunities, shooting 9 for 22 from three-point range and, most decisively, making 22 of 27 free throws compared to Weber State’s 8 of 11.

The first quarter was a tightly contested affair, with Weber State taking a 19-16 lead behind an early burst from Antoniette Emma-Nnopu. The Wildcats’ lead grew to five points early in the second quarter, but BYU responded with a 22-point period to seize control. A key 10-0 run by the Cougars, fueled by three-pointers from Brinley Cannon and Hattie Ogden, flipped a 23-18 deficit into a 28-23 advantage from which Weber State would never recover.

BYU carried a 38-35 lead into halftime and then put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 23-19. The Cougars’ lead ballooned to as many as 17 points in the final period as Weber State’s offense stalled, managing only eight points in the fourth quarter.

Lara Rohkohl led a balanced and efficient BYU scoring attack with 18 points and five rebounds. Marya Hudgins added 11 points and five rebounds, while Arielle Mackey-Williams also chipped in 11 points. Sydney Benally orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out nine assists to go with nine points.

For Weber State, the loss came despite a stellar all-around performance from Antoniette Emma-Nnopu. The junior from Geelong, Australia, filled the stat sheet with 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and a block in 35 minutes. Hannah Robbins was the game’s high scorer, contributing 19 points for the Wildcats.

The game’s advanced metrics underscored BYU’s control. The Cougars scored 79 points on just 75 possessions, an offensive rating of 105.6, while Weber State managed only 62 points on 79 possessions, an offensive rating of 78.3. BYU also won the hustle categories, tallying more assists, steals, blocks and offensive rebounds than the visitors.

BYU now looks ahead to a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam, where they will face Virginia Tech, Marist and Oregon State. Weber State continues a tough road stretch with a game at in-state rival Utah on Wednesday.
