Bethune-Cookman at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland Terrapins delivered a dominant performance from start to finish, cruising to a 95-49 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a near-empty Xfinity Center.
Playing before an announced crowd of 4,920, the Terrapins left no doubt, opening the game on a 17-2 run and never looking back. Maryland’s relentless pressure and efficient offense overwhelmed the Wildcats, who struggled to find any rhythm against a deeper and more talented opponent.
The Terrapins established control immediately, outscoring Bethune-Cookman 24-5 in the first quarter. The defensive intensity was a hallmark of the victory, as Maryland converted 36 points off Bethune-Cookman turnovers and dominated the interior with 54 points in the paint. The Wildcats, by contrast, managed just 16 points in the paint and seven points off turnovers.
Maryland’s offense was a model of balanced scoring, with six players finishing in double figures. Yarden Garzon, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Ra’anana, Israel, led the way with a team-high 12 points and five assists in just 21 minutes of action. Kyndal Walker, a local product from Beltsville, added 13 points, four assists and a block in a team-high 30 minutes.
They were joined by a quartet of teammates who also scored 13 points: Oluchi Okananwa of Boston, Kaylene Smikle of Bay Shore, New York, and Jordan Brooks of Bethune-Cookman. For Brooks, a 5-foot-3 guard from Atlanta, her 13 points and two assists in 28 minutes were a bright spot for the visiting Wildcats. Breanna Williams of Billings, Montana, rounded out Maryland’s double-digit scorers with 12 points.
The Terrapins continued to extend their lead through each subsequent quarter, heading into halftime with a 46-16 advantage and outscoring the Wildcats 29-17 in the third period to put the game completely out of reach.
With the win, Maryland remains undefeated, improving its record to 6-0. Bethune-Cookman falls to 1-4 on the young season. The Terrapins will look to continue their winning streak when they host George Mason on Sunday. Bethune-Cookman’s next contest is on the road at North Florida next Friday.
