Maryland Routs Bethune-Cookman to Remain Undefeated

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of both offensive firepower and suffocating defense, the Maryland Terrapins remained undefeated with a resounding 95-49 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a boisterous Xfinity Center.

From the opening tip, the Terrapins imposed their will, racing out to a 24-5 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. The Wildcats struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Maryland’s relentless pressure, committing a series of turnovers that the Terps swiftly converted into easy baskets. The home team’s dominance was underscored by a staggering 54-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 36-7 margin in points off turnovers.

Maryland’s victory was a testament to its depth, with six players scoring in double figures in a balanced scoring effort. Yarden Garzon, a sophomore from Ra’anana, Israel, led the way with a team-high 12 points, adding five assists in just 21 minutes of action. Her efficient play set the tone for an offense that operated with precision throughout the contest.

She was joined by a quintet of teammates who each contributed 13 points: Kyndal Walker of Beltsville, Maryland, who also dished out four assists; Oluchi Okananwa of Boston, Massachusetts, who was a disruptive force defensively; and Kaylene Smikle of Bay Shore, New York. Breanna Williams of Billings, Montana, rounded out the high scorers with 12 points of her own. The Terrapins’ ball movement was exemplary, leading to numerous high-percentage shots.

For Bethune-Cookman, guard Jordan Brooks of Atlanta provided a bright spot, battling for a team-high 13 points over 28 minutes. However, the Wildcats were simply overwhelmed by Maryland’s size, speed, and defensive intensity from the outset, finding it difficult to execute their half-court sets and get clean looks at the basket.

The game’s trajectory was set early. After a slow start for both teams, Maryland’s Oluchi Okananwa broke the ice with a driving layup, sparking a 17-0 run that put the Terps firmly in control. Bethune-Cookman turnovers on consecutive possessions led to quick transition scores for Maryland, with Okananwa and Garzon capitalizing on the Wildcats’ miscues. A three-pointer from Jordan Brooks late in the first quarter provided a momentary respite for the visitors, but Maryland answered immediately, closing the period with a 24-5 lead.

The second and third quarters followed a similar pattern, with Maryland continuing to extend its advantage. The Terrapins led 46-16 at halftime and exploded for 29 points in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach at 75-33. The Wildcats showed more fight in the final period, scoring 16 points, but the outcome was long since decided.

With the win, Maryland improved its perfect record to 6-0 on the young season. The Terrapins will look to continue their strong start when they host George Mason on Sunday. Bethune-Cookman, meanwhile, fell to 1-4 and will seek to regroup on the road at North Florida next Friday. The loss extends a challenging early-season schedule for the Wildcats, who have faced several power-conference opponents.
