Iowa at Northern Iowa
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes delivered a dominant defensive performance, cruising to a lopsided 74-41 victory over the Northern Iowa Panthers in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at a sold-out McLeod Center.
From the opening tip, Iowa’s defensive pressure stifled the Panthers, holding the home team to just eight points in the first quarter and seven in the second. The Hawkeyes built a 35-15 halftime lead and never looked back, expanding their advantage in the third quarter before closing out the win.
The statistical disparity was stark. Iowa’s defense was the story, forcing Northern Iowa into 17 turnovers and holding the Panthers to an anemic 13-of-57 shooting from the floor, a 22.8 percent clip. Northern Iowa managed just four 3-pointers on 21 attempts. The Hawkeyes converted those Panther mistakes into 17 points, while Northern Iowa managed only five points off Iowa’s 14 turnovers.
Offensively, the Hawkeyes were led by a potent backcourt performance. Chazadi Wright, a 5-foot-4 guard from Atlanta, poured in a game-high 19 points in 28 minutes of action. She was efficient from the field and added two rebounds and two assists.
Inside, 6-foot-5 freshman Layla Hays of Wasilla, Alaska, provided a major spark off the bench. In just 19 minutes, Hays scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds, showcasing her presence on both ends of the floor.
For the Panthers, who struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm, Bri Robinson was a bright spot. The Lincoln, Nebraska, native scored 15 points and collected six rebounds. Elise Jaeger of West Des Moines battled hard on the glass, securing a game-high 10 rebounds to go with three points.
The Hawkeyes improved their season record to a perfect 4-0, while the loss dropped Northern Iowa to 0-3.
Iowa’s schedule intensifies with a trip to Orlando, Florida, for a matchup against Baylor on Thursday, followed by a game against Miami (Fla.) on Saturday. Northern Iowa looks to secure its first win on the road at Creighton on Thursday.
