Iowa Hawkeyes Dominate Northern Iowa Panthers in Road Victory

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes delivered a commanding defensive performance, overwhelming the Northern Iowa Panthers in a 74-41 victory in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at a sold-out McLeod Center.

A crowd of 7,146 witnessed the Hawkeyes improve to 4-0 on the young season, while the Panthers remained winless at 0-3.

The game was defined by stifling defense and frigid shooting from the home team. Iowa held Northern Iowa to a paltry 22.8 percent shooting from the floor. The Panthers managed just 13 field goals on 57 attempts and connected on only 4 of 21 shots from beyond the arc. Northern Iowa’s offensive struggles were quantified by an offensive rating of 55.7, scoring just 41 points over 74 possessions.

Iowa’s offense, while not at its most efficient, steadily built its lead through consistent production each quarter. The Hawkeyes led 15-8 after the first quarter, extended the advantage to 35-15 by halftime, and put the game fully out of reach with a 25-point third quarter, entering the final period ahead 60-26.

Chazadi Wright, a 5-foot-4 guard from Atlanta, led all scorers with 19 points for Iowa. She was efficient from the field and added two assists in 28 minutes of action. Layla Hays, a 6-foot-5 forward from Wasilla, Alaska, provided a strong interior presence off the bench, contributing 14 points and seven rebounds in just 19 minutes.

For Northern Iowa, Bri Robinson of Lincoln, Nebraska, was the lone bright spot, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds. Elise Jaeger, from West Des Moines, hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds but was limited to just three points. Ryley Goebel of Urbana anchored the Panthers’ defense with five points, eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks.

The Hawkeyes dominated several key statistical categories. They outscored the Panthers 34-14 in the paint and capitalized on Northern Iowa’s mistakes, generating 17 points off 17 Panther turnovers. Iowa also controlled the glass, securing 13 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second-chance points.

Iowa’s ball movement and defensive activity were also factors, as they finished with nine assists and nine steals. The Hawkeyes shot 45.3 percent from the field and committed 14 turnovers.

The victory extends Iowa’s strong start to the season, which includes decisive wins over Drake, Evansville and Southern. The Hawkeyes now look ahead to a challenging neutral-site game against Baylor on Thursday in Orlando, Florida.

Northern Iowa, which has also suffered close losses to Saint Louis and North Dakota State, will attempt to secure its first win when it travels to face Creighton on Thursday.
