Mercer Holds Off Gardner-Webb for Home Victory

MACON, Ga. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities at the free-throw line, the Mercer Bears held off a persistent Gardner-Webb squad for a 61-56 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at Hawkins Arena.

A crowd of 407 watched as the Bears improved to 2-1 on the young season, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs remained winless at 0-3.

The game was ultimately decided at the charity stripe, where Gardner-Webb’s offensive woes were most acute. The Runnin’ Bulldogs converted just 7 of 18 free-throw attempts, a debilitating 38.9 percent that left numerous points on the board in a tight contest. Mercer, by contrast, was efficient from the line, making 7 of 8.

Mercer was led by a game-high 20 points from Micah O’Dell. The guard from St. Louis, Missouri, played 36 minutes and added four assists, providing the steady offensive hand the Bears needed on a night where clean possessions were at a premium. She was instrumental in the final minutes, assisting on key baskets to help Mercer maintain its narrow lead.

Gardner-Webb’s effort was spearheaded by Nyla Walker, a 5-foot-4 guard from Frankfort, Illinois, who scored 16 points. Makayla Legette of Latta, South Carolina, added 11 points and a team-high five assists for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The game began at a deliberate pace, with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Gardner-Webb held a 19-16 lead after the first quarter, but Mercer tightened its defense in the second period. The Bears outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 17-10 before halftime to take a 33-29 lead into the break, a margin they would not relinquish.

Mercer extended its lead to seven points late in the third quarter, but Gardner-Webb refused to fade. The Runnin’ Bulldogs capitalized on Mercer’s ball-security issues, scoring 21 points off 22 Bears turnovers. A driving layup by Legette with just over two minutes remaining in the game brought Gardner-Webb within three points at 59-56.

That was as close as the visitors would get. On the ensuing possession, Mercer worked the clock before O’Dell found Stephanie Utomi for a layup that pushed the lead back to five with under a minute to play. Gardner-Webb had several chances to cut into the deficit but came up empty on its final possessions.

Utomi, a 5-11 forward from Detroit, Michigan, provided a crucial spark off the Mercer bench, scoring 10 points. Teammate Ariana Bennett, a 6-1 forward from Edwardsville, Illinois, also chipped in 10 points. For Gardner-Webb, international players made key contributions, with Denmark’s Kamille Henriksen scoring seven points and Spain’s Sara Menendez adding five points and stout defense.

Statistically, the game was a near mirror image in several categories. Mercer shot 48 percent from the field (24 of 50) while Gardner-Webb shot 41.5 percent (22 of 53). Both teams made six 3-pointers. The Runnin’ Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, particularly on the offensive glass with 12 boards, and recorded 10 steals to Mercer’s nine. However, their 16 turnovers and profound struggles at the free-throw line proved too much to overcome.

The loss extends a difficult start to the season for Gardner-Webb, which fell to Queens (NC) and West Georgia in its first two games. Mercer, after opening the season with a win over UNC Asheville and a loss to Clemson, secured its second home victory.

Gardner-Webb will look for its first win Thursday on the road against Virginia Tech. Mercer also hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Wake Forest on Thursday.
