Jaguars Upset Broncos Behind Lawrence’s 3 Touchdowns
DENVER (Interstat) — In a result that defied projections and tightened the race atop the AFC, the Jacksonville Jaguars delivered a statement victory on the road, defeating the Denver Broncos 34 to 20 on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The game, played before 75,261 fans, saw the Jaguars improve to 11-4, handing the Broncos just their third loss of the season and dropping them to 12-3. Pre-game analytics heavily favored Denver, with Interstat’s game simulator projecting a 33-21 Broncos win and its ELO system giving Denver an 88.6% probability of victory. Jacksonville, however, entered as a narrow 3.5-point favorite on the betting line, and it was the Jaguars who controlled the contest for the majority of the afternoon.
The most important part of the game was Jacksonville’s explosive third quarter, which turned a tight 17-10 halftime lead into a commanding 31-17 advantage. After Denver opened the second half with a swift 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 38-yard scoring run by RJ Harvey to pull within a touchdown, the Jaguars responded with two decisive touchdowns of their own to seize control.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the clear star for Jacksonville, engineered both scoring marches. The first was a 75-yard drive that he finished himself with a 1-yard touchdown run. The second was set up by a critical Denver turnover. On the ensuing Broncos possession, defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah stripped Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, recovering the fumble at the Denver 34-yard line. Five plays later, Lawrence connected with running back Travis Etienne for a 10-yard touchdown pass, effectively putting the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter.
Lawrence was masterful, completing 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns, adding 20 yards and another score on six carries. His primary target was receiver Parker Washington, who torched the Denver secondary for 145 yards and a touchdown on six receptions, including a 63-yard catch-and-run that set up Etienne’s score. Tight end Brenton Strange also caught five passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.
For Denver, Nix compiled strong volume statistics, completing 28 of 47 passes for 352 yards and a touchdown, but was hampered by the key fumble and a late fourth-quarter interception by Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones that snuffed out a potential comeback. Nix also rushed for 11 yards. Harvey provided a bright spot for the Broncos’ offense, gaining 50 yards on the ground with a touchdown and catching four passes for 71 yards. Receiver Courtland Sutton had six receptions for 86 yards and Denver’s lone receiving touchdown.
Defensively, the Jaguars were led by linebacker Foyesade Oluokun’s 11 tackles, while the Broncos’ effort was headlined by linebacker Alex Singleton’s game-high 13 tackles. Denver’s defensive front, led by John Franklin-Myers with two sacks, managed to pressure Lawrence at times but could not contain the Jacksonville passing attack when it mattered most.
The game began with a methodical Jacksonville drive that consumed nearly the entire first quarter, culminating in Lawrence’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Washington. Denver answered in the second quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Nix to Sutton and a 54-yard Wil Lutz field goal, but Lawrence led a 59-yard drive just before halftime, finishing it with a 3-yard touchdown toss to Strange. Kicker Cam Little added a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the half to give Jacksonville a 17-10 lead at the break.
After the Jaguars’ third-quarter outburst, the teams exchanged field goals in the final period. Little hit from 26 yards for Jacksonville, and Lutz connected from 21 yards for Denver, accounting for the final margin.
The victory extends Jacksonville’s winning streak to three games and keeps them in the hunt for the AFC South title and a high playoff seed. They will travel to face the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday. The Broncos, still in firm control of the AFC West, must regroup quickly for a short-week showdown on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day.
