Rams edge Seahawks on late missed field goal

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by critical turnovers and a dramatic final stand, the Los Angeles Rams held off a late surge by the Seattle Seahawks for a 21-19 victory on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

A crowd of 75,323 watched as the Rams improved to 8-2, solidifying their position atop the NFC West, while the Seahawks fell to 7-3 in a pivotal divisional clash.

The game was ultimately decided by the Rams’ defense, which intercepted Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold three times and forced a missed 61-yard field goal attempt by Jason Myers as time expired. Safety Kamren Kinchens was the standout, hauling in two interceptions, while cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Darious Williams each added one.

The contest began in stunning fashion, with the Rams seizing immediate control. On just the third play from scrimmage, Kinchens intercepted a Darnold pass intended for Cooper Kupp and returned it 31 yards to the Seattle 3-yard line. The Seahawks’ defense mounted a valiant goal-line stand, stuffing running back Blake Corum on three consecutive runs, but Kyren Williams finally punched it in on fourth down to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.

After the teams exchanged field goals, the Rams engineered another impressive first-quarter drive. Williams broke free for a 34-yard run to the Seattle 1, and on the next play, Matthew Stafford connected with Davante Adams on a 1-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-3.

The Seahawks, however, refused to fold. They methodically moved the ball but were repeatedly stymied by the Rams’ defense in the red zone, settling for three Jason Myers field goals in the first half. A 22-yard kick as time expired in the second quarter brought the score to 14-12 at the break, with Seattle having failed to find the end zone despite multiple opportunities deep in Los Angeles territory.

The third quarter was a defensive stalemate. The Seahawks continued their pattern of moving the ball between the 20s but failing to convert, adding another Myers field goal to take a 15-14 lead. It was their first and only advantage of the game. The Rams’ offense, held in check for most of the second and third quarters, finally reignited early in the fourth.

A drive keyed by a 10-yard run from Williams was capped by a 6-yard Stafford touchdown pass to tight end Colby Parkinson, putting the Rams back on top 21-15.

Seattle answered with its most determined drive of the day. Darnold, who finished 29 of 44 for 279 yards, methodically led the Seahawks down the field. The drive was kept alive by a key fourth-down conversion and was culminated by a 1-yard touchdown run by Kenneth Walker III with 2:23 remaining. The score pulled Seattle to within two points, but Myers’ extra point tied the game at 21, setting up a tense finale.

The Rams’ offense, needing to run out the clock, was forced to punt after a three-and-out, giving Seattle the ball back at their own 1-yard line with 1:41 left and no timeouts.

Darnold engineered a frantic, last-ditch effort, moving the Seahawks to the Los Angeles 43-yard line with five seconds left. A defensive pass interference penalty on Emmanuel Forbes Jr. on the penultimate play gave Seattle one untimed down, setting up Myers for a potential game-winning 61-yard field goal. The kick had the distance but sailed wide left, sealing the victory for the Rams.

Statistically, the Seahawks dominated time of possession and total yards but were undone by their four turnovers. Walker III was a workhorse, rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown and adding 44 receiving yards. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was Darnold’s primary target, catching nine passes for 105 yards.

For the Rams, Stafford managed the game efficiently, completing 15 of 28 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Williams was the engine of the offense, rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries. Puka Nacua added 75 yards on seven receptions.

Defensively, the Rams were led by safety Kam Curl, who registered 11 tackles. Linebackers Nate Landman and Omar Speights each added seven tackles in the winning effort.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Seattle on Thursday, Dec. 18. The Rams will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday, while the Seahawks travel to face the Tennessee Titans.
