Washington Commanders vs. Miami Dolphins
MADRID (Interstat) — Riley Patterson kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Miami Dolphins to a 16-13 victory over the Washington Commanders in a National Football League game on Sunday.
A crowd of 78,610 at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu saw the Dolphins improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Commanders fell to 3-8 in a defensive struggle that was projected to be a high-scoring affair.
The game-winning drive was set up by an interception from Miami’s Jack Jones, who picked off Washington quarterback Marcus Mariota in the extra period. The Dolphins then methodically moved into field goal range for Patterson, who was perfect on the day, also connecting from 46 and 39 yards.
Washington had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but Matt Gay’s 56-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide right. Gay also missed a 51-yard attempt earlier in the contest, finishing two for four on field goals.
The game was a battle of field position and rushing attacks for much of the afternoon. Miami’s ground game, led by De’Von Achane, was the most consistent offensive weapon. Achane rushed for 120 yards on 21 carries and added 45 yards on five receptions.
Mariota was the primary offensive engine for Washington, completing 20 of 30 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 49 yards on four scrambles. His favorite target was Deebo Samuel, who caught seven passes for 74 yards and Washington’s lone touchdown, a 20-yard connection in the third quarter.
Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa managed the game efficiently, completing 14 of 20 passes for 171 yards, but the Dolphins’ offense found the end zone only once. That score came on a 1-yard run by Ollie Gordon II in the fourth quarter, which tied the game at 13 and ultimately forced overtime.
The Dolphins’ defense was led by a massive performance from linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who racked up 20 tackles. Tyrel Dodson added 11 tackles and a sack, while the secondary was anchored by Minkah Fitzpatrick and his nine tackles.
Washington’s defense kept them in the game, with linebacker Bobby Wagner recording eight tackles and cornerback Jonathan Jones adding six tackles and a sack.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for the Commanders, who have now lost four of their last five games. The Dolphins, meanwhile, have won two of their last three.
Washington will host the Denver Broncos on Nov. 30. Miami returns home to face the New Orleans Saints on the same date.
