Indianapolis at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Steelers used a dominant second quarter and a late defensive stand to hold off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Indianapolis Colts, securing a 27-20 victory in a National Football League contest Sunday at Three Rivers Stadium.

A crowd of 66,677 watched as the Steelers improved their record to 5-3, while the Colts, despite a valiant comeback attempt, fell to 7-2.

The game began as a defensive struggle, with the only score of the first quarter coming on a 1-yard touchdown run by Colts quarterback Daniel Jones. That capped a methodical opening drive that saw Jones connect frequently with wide receiver Alec Pierce, who finished the day with six receptions for 115 yards.

The momentum shifted decisively in the second quarter. Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who completed 25 of 35 passes for 203 yards, engineered a 17-point outburst. He first found tight end Pat Freiermuth on a 12-yard touchdown pass. The Steelers’ defense then set up the next score when linebacker Payton Wilson intercepted a Jones pass intended for Josh Downs and returned it to the Indianapolis 14-yard line. Two plays later, running back Jaylen Warren punched it in from a yard out for his first touchdown of the day.

Wilson was a force for the Steelers’ defense, recording a game-high 14 tackles to go with his critical interception. The Steelers added a 25-yard field goal from Chris Boswell as time expired in the first half to take a 17-7 lead into the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Warren extended the Steelers’ lead early in the fourth with his second rushing touchdown, this time from 2 yards out. The Colts responded with a 52-yard field goal from Michael Badgley, but Pittsburgh answered with another Boswell field goal, this one from 46 yards, to make it 27-10 with just under seven minutes to play.

Refusing to go quietly, the Colts mounted a comeback. Jones, who threw for 342 yards on 31-of-50 passing, led a quick scoring drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Josh Downs, cutting the deficit to 27-17. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Colts defense forced a punt, and Jones drove the offense into field goal range, where Badgley connected from 53 yards out to bring Indianapolis within a touchdown with nine seconds remaining.

The Colts’ hopes for a miracle ended when their second onside kick attempt was recovered by Pittsburgh’s DK Metcalf, allowing Rodgers to take a knee and seal the victory.

The Steelers’ defense, while yielding significant yardage, came up with key plays at critical moments. Alongside Wilson’s big day, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. had eight tackles, a sack and a game-sealing interception in the final minutes, while linebacker Alex Highsmith contributed two sacks.

The Colts’ defense was led by linebacker Germaine Pratt with eight tackles and defensive end Laiatu Latu, who recorded 2.5 sacks. Despite the loss, Jones’ primary targets were productive, with Michael Pittman Jr. catching nine passes for 115 yards and Pierce adding his 115-yard performance.

The Steelers will look to build on the win when they travel to face the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday. The Colts, who saw a seven-game winning streak snapped, will return home to host the Atlanta Falcons.
