Steelers Hold Off Colts’ Late Rally for 27‑20 Victory
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — In a game defined by opportunistic defense and a dominant second-quarter surge, the Pittsburgh Steelers overcame an early deficit to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 27-20 on Sunday at a rain-soaked Three Rivers Stadium.
A crowd of 66,677 watched as the Steelers, trailing after a sluggish start, erupted for 17 points in the second quarter and then held off a frantic fourth-quarter rally by the Colts to improve their record to 5-3. Indianapolis, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 7-2.
The Colts struck first, capitalizing on their opening drive with a methodical 15-play, 65-yard march that consumed nearly seven minutes. The series was kept alive by a 36-yard deep connection from quarterback Daniel Jones to wide receiver Alec Pierce. After three runs by Jonathan Taylor moved the ball to the 1-yard line, Jones finished the drive himself, plunging up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown run to give Indianapolis a 7-0 lead.
Pittsburgh’s offense, stymied by the Colts’ defense and a relentless pass rush led by Laiatu Latu, who finished with 2.5 sacks, was ineffective for the entire first quarter. The momentum shifted dramatically in the second period.
The Steelers finally found their footing, engineering a 13-play, 75-yard drive. It was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Warren, cutting the deficit to 7-6. Chris Boswell’s extra point tied the game.
On the ensuing Colts possession, the Steelers’ defense delivered a critical blow. Linebacker Payton Wilson intercepted a Jones pass intended for Josh Downs, returning it 17 yards to the Indianapolis 14. Two plays later, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threaded a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth, giving Pittsburgh its first lead at 14-7.
The Steelers’ defense continued to harass Jones, and after forcing a punt, Rodgers efficiently moved the offense into field goal range in the final minute of the half. Boswell drilled a 25-yard field goal as time expired, sending Pittsburgh into the locker room with a 17-7 advantage.
The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams trading punts. The Colts threatened late in the period, driving to the Pittsburgh 35, but the drive ended when Jones was intercepted by Steelers linebacker Jack Sawyer.
Pittsburgh carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, extending its lead on the first play of the period. Warren powered in for his second rushing touchdown, a 2-yard score that culminated a 99-yard drive and gave the Steelers a commanding 24-7 lead.
Indianapolis, refusing to go quietly, mounted a comeback. Michael Badgley connected on a 52-yard field goal to make it 24-10. After the Steelers answered with a 46-yard Boswell field goal to push the lead back to 27-10, Jones led the Colts on a rapid 75-yard touchdown drive. He found Downs for a 4-yard scoring strike, and with the extra point, the Colts were within 27-17 with 4:30 remaining.
The Colts’ onside kick attempt was recovered by Pittsburgh, but their defense forced a quick three-and-out, giving Jones one final chance. He drove Indianapolis deep into Steelers territory, but with just over two minutes left, his deep pass for Pierce was intercepted by cornerback Joey Porter Jr. at the Pittsburgh 39, effectively sealing the victory.
Jones led a desperate final drive in the closing seconds, setting up a 53-yard Badgley field goal as time expired for the final margin. Jones finished with 342 yards passing, one touchdown and three interceptions, while also rushing for a score. Pierce and Michael Pittman Jr. each had 115 receiving yards in the losing effort.
For Pittsburgh, Rodgers managed the game effectively, completing 25 of 35 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. Warren was the workhorse on the ground, carrying 16 times for 31 yards and two touchdowns. The Steelers’ defense was the story, sacking Jones four times and intercepting him three times, with Wilson and Porter Jr. making pivotal plays.
The Steelers travel to face the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday, while the Colts return home to host the Atlanta Falcons.
